I downloaded the plex server, added it to application folder but nothing happens when i try to open it. When I go on the Plex web player and try to add music, it tells me to “get Plex media server” as if I never installed it. I have an m3 MacBook pro running Sonoma 14.6.1. Please advise if there’s any way I can use the server otherwise I’ll just deactivate my new Plex account and delete the plex amp from my phone. Thanks. Raymond Gonzalez
When you’re referring to the web player… are you using the hosted web app or the one bundled with your server (using the server‘s local IP address or loopback if you’re on the same machine → http://127.0.0.1:32400/web)? To complete the server setup, you’ll need to use the bundled version.
If you’re using the bundled version but still get to see this behavior… did you previously run another version of Plex Media Server on this machine (possibly using a different Plex account)?
Thanks for the quick response. I was using the hosted web app. I tried the bundled address you included in the email and got a “can’t connect to the server” on the browser. I don’t believe I’ve ever run another version of Plex on this machine. I see the application on my finder window (300.4 MB) but when I try to open it nothing happens. My dock starts to expand as if it’s going to launch but it never does.
If the Plex Media Server won’t start and doesn’t even get to the stage where it’ll be writing to the server logs, you can attempt the following procedure to see if there’s any error messages on the OS level:
Open Finder and navigate to /Applications
Select Show Content from the context menu of the Plex Media Server.app item
Navigate to Contents/MacOS
Open the Terminal app
Drag the Plex Media Server executable from the Finder window (#3) into the Terminal Window and press Return to execute it
This is no different from running the app, so it won’t succeed – but you should get a more specific error message about what’s causing it to fail starting.
