Plex server not reachable after password change

Server Version#: v.1.42.2.10156-f737b826c
Player Version#: -

Hi Guys,

unfortunately i have big issue after i changed my password for my Plex account yesterday.
The change was also triggered because of login problems at mobile Browsers, for me it was not possible anymore to login with a browser at my phone (for plex.tv/link for example.)

Anyways, after i changed the password my server instantly was not available anymore and I tried to login there at the localhost but i didn’t hat permissions for the server anymore.

So i tried to “hard reset” that problem an deleted the server from my account to claim it in a new instance.

and yes, after couple of hours trying with AI to resolve my problem I guess my Account itself has a Problem…?

Here is a Summary of the AI what I did in the past hours:

Description:

Since changing the password of my Plex account, I can no longer use my Plex Media Server.
Symptoms:

  • The Plex Media Server process is running permanently in the Windows Task Manager.

  • When I open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web or http://localhost:32400/web, I am always immediately redirected to app.plex.tv and see the login page.

  • After logging in, I do not see any server, neither locally nor in the server list of my account.

  • In the local web UI I only get the screen “Add media to Plex / Get Plex Media Server”, as if no server was installed at all.

  • Repeated uninstall/reinstall (including deleting/renaming C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\) did not change anything.

  • I also installed a completely fresh Windows instance with a new Plex Media Server – I see exactly the same behavior there.

  • Sometimes I also get messages like “No permission” or “Media server not found”, even though I am accessing the host locally.

What I have already tried:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Plex multiple times (including an older/stable version).

  • Renamed/deleted the local data folder under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server and let Plex recreate it.

  • Cleared all browser cookies and site data for plex.tv, app.plex.tv, 127.0.0.1, and localhost, and tested different browsers (including incognito/private windows).

  • Used Windows System Restore to roll back to a point before the password change.

  • Tested on a fresh Windows VM with a new Plex installation (same result).

Even the Preferences.xml is doesn’t exist in my server files?

The server has been running for about 7 years and I have never had these problems when changing passwords.

Does anyone have an idea whether something in my account might be “stuck” (server entry, token, security flag, etc.), or how I can get Plex to properly register the local server again?

Changing your Plex account password unclaims your server (removes it from your account).

You need to re-claim the server.

On Windows, the information is stored in the registry.

See these two documents:

After editing the registry, reboot the PC, launch Plex, and try to claim it.

Also, make sure the browser has access to the local network. See Important note about the Plex Web app - Local Network Access .

Where Plex stores server settings, claiming information, etc. varies by platform. Details in the “Why am I locked out…” document.

Windows: Windows registry.
Linux: preferences.xml
Mac: plist file
