Plex server not registering, although accessible with direct IP:Port

Server Version#: 1.41.4.9463
Player Version#: Any (web based, Android)

Running on Synology NAS, DSM 7.2.2
Unifi Dream Pro router, port forwarding 32400

I’m running into random issues with Plex server being unreachable after a while.
I can access the server directly through “IP_adress:32400” since port forwarding is working

But when using plex.tv, after a few minutes/hours, the server simply vanishes from the access bar. I don’t even see it as “unavailable” when entering the advanced settings listing all my servers.

I can reconnect to it using a direct IP connexion, Remote access seems to be operational according to the server configuration tab, but no, it’s not visible…

Also, I’m very uncomfortable with opening port, is there an alternate mechanism for remote access (similar to Synology remote sign in mechanism) ?

Regards

You could use Plex Relay, but that comes with a 2 Mbps bandwidth limitation. However, it would let you disable your port forward. Your server connects to Plex’s relay servers. Then when clients want to connect to your server, they do it through the relay.

Or, you might consider using an overlay network such as TailScale or Twingate. They essentially create a mesh VPN between authorized devices so that they appear local to one-another.

This is honestly driving me crazy.

After many attempts, I still can’t get it to work reliably. It did yesterday for about one hour, then it stopped.

What is odd is that I can connect remotely to the server using IP_Adress:Port redirection in the browser, I access the server, I can configure various settings and I can play content.

However if I try to access it using Plex.tv, it’s not visible, either in the left pane, or in the list of available servers. It does not even show “as unavailable”.

What I noticed is that if I disable Remote server (which has no effect on my ability to control it from the outside since I have a direct IP_Server connection), the enable it back, it states for a few seconds “Server is connected”, and then it reverts back to “server not available remotely”. Which is obviously false, since I’m connected remotely (I’m using an external connection to test it).

I checked the log, but there is no indication as to what’s happening.

If anyone has any guidance, that would be more than appreciated.

I’ve suddenly got this problem as well. It sometimes works, then suddenly it stops working.

PMS Version: 1.41.4.9463
Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)

My port is exposed, I can access my Plex Server from outside my network by typing in “Public IP Address”:32400/web/. But Remote access shows that it’s unavailable and all I can do is connect to it through relay. I’ve spent way too much time trying to figure out what is causing it and I’ve just come to the conclusion that it has to be some sort of issue with Plex.

I can reach my server directly on 32400 from outside my network. Why isn’t Remote Access working?

Is there some sort of debug logging I can enable to look for this? When I Retry “Remote Access” I get a few warning logs:

“[CERT] TLS connection from [::ffff:185.172.52.42]:23446 came in with unrecognized plex.direct SNI name ‘[REDACTED].abd247abd67d495891cc75bb4240d685.plex.direct’; using installed plex.direct cert”

The client is using the old certificate / wrong certificate

Force restart the client (terminate then start)

I also recommend you turn off IPv6 setting (Server - Network - Show Advanced)
you have IPv4

Of the servers for your account, which are you using / should I be looking at ?

Active server named Colossus is the only one I’m currently using. (Was doing some testing and troubleshooting with the others).

IPV6 is disabled.

I’ve disabled relay, and it looks like I’m still able to occasionally able to stream from outside my network. Yet Plex still says Remote Access is not functional.

Edit: I’m also not sure what client is originating that TLS connection from 185.172.52.42. That’s not a client I have control over. I’ve removed all authorized devices and removed any library sharing that was available, yet those entries continue to show up.

I’ve also done a ‘systemctl restart plexmediaserver’, but both the bad TLS connection entries and " Not available outside your network" remain.

Edit: Answered my own question. Looks like the primary Remote Access Plex servers are currently in Ireland. making an exception for those IPs eliminated my Remote Access flipping.

Is Plex using servers outside of the United States to verify remote access is working?

Here are two servers Plex uses for Remote Access testing.

If these are allowed access, the Reachability test will succeed and it will stay green
