Plex Server will not start after complete reinstallation | log makes it look like a file wasn't created looking at WAP

Server Version#:1.16.1.1291
Player Version#:

A Plex server on a Windows 10 machine lost its ability for remote access and the Plex data files were filling up the boot SSD. I completely uninstalled Plex, deleted its folders, and reinstalled it using the installation option to place the installation on F:\Plex. The server will not start. The logs appear to be on %localappdata%\plex media server\logs. The logs imply that some files are missing and that there is something wrong with some network configuration. It is trying to do something with 192.168.0.251, a DLINK DAP-1650 wireless access point that shouldn’t enter the picture at all. The server is on wired ethernet. Thank-you for any advice that you can provide.Plex Media Server.log (124.6 KB)

Not a good idea. This will only place the program code onto F:
However, the Plex data folder is still on C: – and that is the one which is growing all the time.

Your new installation is still using the default location on C: for the data.
It is also likely, that the main Plex database file on C: is damaged, due to it running into a space constraint.

The way forward for you:

Otto,
Thank-you very much for your advice.
At this point their are no libraries so the metadata size should be very small. There is still over 100 Gb free on drive c:.

I will follow your advice, but I do not understand why the Plex server is not starting to even give me a chance to add libraries or configure the server.

Thanks again.

Stuart

It may still try to use the damaged plex data from the old installation.
If you don’t have any libraries yet, you should simply do this:

  • shut down plex server (using the tray icon)
  • empty out the Plex data folder on C:
  • start it up again. If it is running alright, edit the ‘The path where local application data is stored’ right away to your alternate drive letter.
  • then restart Plex server once again and set up your first library

Otto,
Thank-you for your additional reply. I am sorry that I was unclear. All Plex data were removed when I uninstalled it. The entire folder structure was deleted. I resigned myself to repopulating the libraries.

Thank-you for your pointers to storing the metadata elsewhere once I can actually get a Plex server installation to work again on this Windows 10 computer. I physically disconnected the WAP at 192.168.0.251 that Plex seemed to be trying to communicate with, but it didn’t make any difference.

I will completely uninstall Plex again and delete all of its folders, reinstall it as you suggest. I will report back if this fixes the issue or does not.

Again, thank-you for your suggestions.
Stuart

I uninstalled Plex again. Installed it with default installation folder. Clicked launch button. Selected Open Plex got the original screen, clicked got it, named my server, unchecked accessible outside my network box (I got the same result when I had it checked before an uninstall reinstall cycle), I get the attached screen. After a prolonged period of the spinning wheel, I eventually get to an add a library screen, I clicked finish, and after another long delay, I get Flicker-SRV Plex2 not available.
I am attaching the screen shot and log file for this installation. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Plex Media server several times now and cannot get Plex to start up as an unclaimed server and then let me link it to my account. Thank-you for any assistance that you can offer. StuartPlex Media Server.log (585.7 KB)

What do you get if you call up the local version of the web app, http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
?

Otto,
Thank-you for your response. What I get from the local version web app is a list of servers most of which are failed installations that are unreachable, plus the QNAP server that is running fine. The most recent fresh installation of the Plex servver on Windows 10, I left the server name at the default, added no libraries, and after continuing it indicated that the server wasn’t available. The most recent server log and images are attached.
Thank-you for your help. Stuart

Oh sorry, I forgot to tell you to use an ‘incognito’ web browser window. i.e. a browser window which is not logged in to a plex account yet.

Otto.
When I log out of Plex, it immediately takes me to the login screen. If I close that tab and paste in the local web address: http://127.0.0.1:32400/web the page hangs for minutes while it displays waiting for 127.0.0.1. The longest I waited before I closed the tab and tried again was about 10 minutes. I exited Plex, restarted it, then tried the local version of the web app again. It immediately redirected to another url
(https://app.plex.tv/auth/#!?clientID=lbgtbaottt&context[device][product]=Plex%20Web&context[device][version]=3.95.2&context[device][platform]=Firefox&context[device][platformVersion]=67.0&context[device][device]=Windows&context[device][model]=bundled&context[device][screenResolution]=2176x1061%2C2176x1224&context[device][layout]=desktop&forwardUrl=http%3A%2F%2F127.0.0.1%3A32400%2Fweb%2Findex.html%23%3FpinID%3D1594047311&code=s9p0titspvf4xzovyzgg27uqo).
This URL prompted me to login. I closed this tab and tried the local web app again. It again redirected me to the login screen. Thank-you for your assistance. Stuart

What I meant with ‘incognito’ browser window is to open a special web browser window which doesn’t use your regular browser settings and cookies.
With Chrome you use CTRL+Shift+N
with Firefox CTRL+Shift+P

Otto,
Thank-you for your additional instructions. Using a private browsing window from Firefox, I obtain the same result. I get a window asking me to log in using my Plexpass email. I do not use Chrome, but installed it to perform your instructions. Using a private (incognito) window from Chrome I get the same result. A short delay and a request to login to my Plexpass account. Thank-you. Stuart

Say, are you using some special DNS server or the default one from your ISP?
If you have access to your router configuration, try using the DNS servers of Google instead. (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4)

There is some stuff in your logs which suggests that plex.tv is not reachable

Otto,
The DNS servers for this machine are set to 75.75.75.75 (Comcast) and 8.8.8.8 (Google). Typing plex.tv into a web browser works fine. It redirects to https://www.plex.tv/ . Entering in https://www.plex.tv/ directly also works. I don’t have any difficulty getting to my other QNAP based server once I log into Plex. Thanks again for your patience. Please advise me of other information that you need. I am attaching the last couple of Plex Media Server.1.log (120.7 KB) Plex server logs. Thank-you. StuartPlex Media Server.log (104.2 KB)

Does that mean that you are using different settings for your other devices?
Try reversing the order of the servers or remove the comcast entry completely as a test (reboot the machine afterwards).

Otto,
I did not check all of my machines. The QNAP and the server that is misbehaving both use the same DNS servers in this order. I removed 75.75.75.75 from the misbehaving server, rebooted and there was no change in behavior. The problem to me seems to be some residue in the registry or elsewhere on the misbehaving server that makes it think that the local server is already ‘claimed.’ Thank-you. Stuart

If you delete the whole Plex branch from the Registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.

and empty out the Plex data folder, you have removed everything.

Otto,

I am glad to hear that. This was done after each uninstall of Plex server, prior to installing it from scratch again. Thank-you. Stuart

The developer of this tool suggested, you should give it a try:

It is intended to replace the login/claim procedure for new servers, and run it directly on the Windows PMS box, and type 127.0.0.1when asked for an IP address

Otto, I will be happy to give this tool a try. I downloaded it, but I do not understand how to start it/use it. Please advise me how to do so. Thank-you. Stuart
