Following recent PC issues I am now trying to set up WMP on my W10 PC. After installing Plex and Plex Media Server and logging in to the website I do not get an option to set up my PC as a server on the Plex screen. The only authorised devices appearing are my web browsers. There is no server option on the left hand side of the screen at all. I’ve read on the forums that this can be an issue because of different users for the Plex Web app and the WMP app but how do I check this ? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times but nothing works.
This might help other Plex users- after a lot of head scratching I’ve now managed to get Plex Media Server working again. I recently installed the Windows 10 1909 feature update and my problems started after that. I have now uninstalled that update , thus reverting to 1903. This seems to have fixed things so there must be an issue with 1909 so I suggest postponing the update as longs as possible until Microsoft fix it !
Hi Geoff, I’m a lot confused by your post. By WMP do you mean Windows Media Player? Does that still even exist? I’m not sure what that has to do with your Plex server setup and I’m not sure about the issues you had with Plex following your Windows Update. I’m running Plex on two Win10 PC’s running the latest Windows Updates and have had no problems.
It seems you’ve got everything running again and that’s great but I’m just confused and wondering if this post may confuse others.
Are you saying that after installing Plex Media Server (PMS) on your Win10 machine you could not access it from Plex clients on other devices, that you could only access it via Plex Web at www.plex.tv?
I didn’t mean WMP at all- I meant Plex Media Server and Player- that was a typo on my part- apologies. When I first started having issues a few days ago I removed the Plex Media server on the website and I don’t think I should have done in hindsight as I am now getting an error message saying server is unclaimed so I can’t update the settings. In desperation I also deleted my old Plex account and set up a new one. Any ideas how I get the deleted server back ? It’s now working -sort of- but for some reason I am now having a bit of difficulty in accessing some of my media on my PC and uploading it (I get a spinning circle and after a minute or two a message saying “changes not saved”. There appears to be an issue somewhere so I think I might have to access my logs and send them in for analysis.
Ahhhh Ok, thanks for clarification. But unfortunately, your situation is very unique and I can’t say I have experience of a situation with those types of curveballs. Rather than just guess at what you could try next, I’ll be honest and say I have no idea, sorry!
Send a DM to @OttoKerner to get your account back.
You need to claim your server properly before setting it up.
Did you go to http://server.local.ip.address:32400/web and run through the wizard.
Already in the works
Yes I’ve run the wiazard but just get a spinning circle then message saying server settings not available.
Meaning ?
Your old account has been restored.
You must switch your server installation back to use it again, using this procedure: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
Make sure not to hamper your web browser with add-ins which interfere with web apps. Make sure both server and web browser can communicate with plex.tv
Set the realtime clock of your computer correctly (no joke).
Thank you, but I am having a great deal of trouble setting up the old server again and the website has now locked me out ! The original Plex account was set up with username geoffwbaplex (or possibly geoffwbaPlex )and I think that was the US site. I think the new user geoffwbaplex2 was set up on the UK site. The registry entries mentioned in the used guide do not exit in my set up. Can you tell me exactly which user name I should be using and would it be best to completely uninstall both Plex programs and files and regsitry entries and then start over?
This one is fairly new and is not deleted.
geoffwbaplex2 is older and has been restored now.
What do you mean by US site and UK site ?
I’ll try wbaplex2 again and see what happens. When accessing the website I sometimes get a message at the top which reads something like “you are now in the US site, would you like to switch to the uk site” (I can’t remember the exact words). I think I’ve used about 3 different passwords and failed to note exactly which password relates to which username , hence trying different ones and causing your website to complain !I will let you know how I get on.
Still having trouble I’m afraid ! I sign in to windows using my email address geoffwba@gmail.com whereas my Plex account is registered to geoffwba@sky.com. Does this matter ? I can sign in to my Plex account with the name geoffwbaPlex2 but when I access my details it says my user name is geoffwbaplex. When I try to add media files I keep getting prompts to download Plex Media Server- I’ve done this a few times using either install or repair but still I cannot add media. So I am completely baffled as to what is going on . Can you also tell me exactly which web address I should be using when attempting to log in?
For initial setup, you always use the local web app http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
I recommend you to use the ‘incognito’ mode of your web browser, to avoid mix-ups of your different plex accounts.
The user name you are using for your Windows account doesn’t matter at all.
Thank you for this info. I can sign in to the local web app OK but it comes up with a warning that the server is not claimed. When I ask to claim it, a spinning circle appears for several seconds and then another message appears “server settings not available”.
I use both Chrome and Opera browsers . Can you tell me how to set up incognito mode on them- I’ve never used that before and don’t know what it does.
Thanks

Thank you, but why am I still seeing “server not available” ?

Then you might be behind a Carrier-Grade NAT.
You will have to ask your ISP whether they are willing to provide you with a publicly accessible IPv4 address, so you can actually use port forwarding.
Or do you have several “router”-type devices in your home network?
If you mean access points then yes, as my main router is a Sky Hub and I also have a Sky mini-box. Until about a week ago Plex was working perfectly and then it is possible I’ve collected some malware (which Malwarebytes has removed I believe). I think the best course of action would be for me to reset my router settings to default , then completely remove Plex, including all registry entries, and the Plex apps, remove my Plex account and then set up a new Plex user. Do you think this would solve my issues?
