I am unable to upgrade to the latest 2 versions of plex server. I am currently running Version 1.18.9.2571 on Win 10 platform. I have tried to install the latest 2 versions to include the 1.19.1.2701. After I hit download and install, it looks like it installed but I still get the banner stating that there is an update availible.
Sounds like it didn’t update properly. Check your logs folder manually. You’ll see a “Installer Logs” folder. Find the one starting with “Plex Media Server” for the time when you tried the update and upload it. If you can’t tell which one, zip up the last few recent ones and provide those.
I zipped the files where do you need me to upload it to?
Attach it to your next comment.

Seeing that you have moved your Plex data folder, I think it might be solved by this:
NB: I cannot recommend to install the Plex server program files to any other location than the default C: They take up only ~160MB anyway.
It was ready set to the correct drive, Drive “I” see attached Also, I have had my server on this drive for 9 months with no issues. It was moved there for space reasons.
.
And that is ok for the “Plex data folder” (which is the one that can grow very big).
I was specifically asking about the program folder of Plex which you should keep on c:
How should I proceed without messing everything else up?
Where are the Plex program files installed at the moment?
I:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server
Please relocate the program files back to drive C:
If you follow this procedure, there won’t be any loss of data:
- Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
- deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
- for safety, reboot Windows
- download the installation exe of the newer version and install it
(If you want to install an older version of PMS, take a look into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Updates)
I quite the app. uninstall did not work got " The specified account already exists" over and over until it gives me setup failed and got log file. see attached Uninstall log Unistall Log Plex Media Server_20200501152752.txt (17.1 KB)
At this point i went back back to windows uninstall to run uninstall again but selected the “repair” option. it fail and gave me the attached log. called repair
Repair Plex Media Server_20200501153406.txt (17.7 KB)
I also found these files on my C drive. These I think are files i have abandoned when i built a new PC in early August. these file have obviously not been updated or user from the dates on them. the files on my “I” drive are more current.
Did you use registry cleaners/uninstaller software previously on this machine?
Try to uninstall it with the MS Fixit: https://support.plex.tv/articles/202967086-windows-errors-trying-to-upgrade-install-or-uninstall-plex-media-server/
Additionally, uninstall all ‘Microsoft Visual C++’ runtimes with year numbers 2015 to 2019.
Then download and install the updated runtime from here Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn
(both x86 and x64 versions)
That is very puzzling. Are you using several Windows user accounts on this machine?
Are you running Plex server as a system service?
Yes, this looks like a Plex data folder. You did copy them to the new location (or you started over after changing the location to drive I:)
It is safe to empty out this folder.
I did recently install MS visual C++. i have deleted a them. I then used MS Fixit to uninstall Plex. rebooted and reinstall Plex but i put i back in “I” becasue i wanted to keep it there and becasue i thingk there was some ohter interen issues with it.
I will see what happens with next update, if I have problems I will reinstall it on “C”
Thank you for your time!!
