Plex Update fails after moving Plex install locations

Hi there,

I moved my media and log folders to a network directory several months ago, since I was continually running out of space in my C drive. Everything works exactly as it should, except that the update from a browser seems to not work.

Looking at the Plex Update Service Launcher log, I see the follow. Unfortunately nothing very descriptive.

I tried to manually run C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plex Update Service Launcher.exe from the command line and nothing happens and no error message is printed.

I can manually do an update by clicking the update .exe file and everything works smoothly. Again, no other problems with my Plex system except this. Any thoughts?

Did you at some point move the Plex executables to an I:\ drive or is that your Plex server data directory?

The I:\ drive is my Plex server data directory. All of the executables are still in the original location C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\

I noticed that the following settings weren’t checked in the Plex server settings, so hopefully now I should have more debug information

Enable Plex Media Server debug logging
Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging

Anything else I can do find out why Plex Update fails?

I’m not sure the PMS log settings apply to the updater.
Also… you really only should enable verbose logging if you specifically need it.

I found this post referring to the addendum of the guide how to move your data directory:

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your response on the addendum. So everything in the registry checks out.
So as I was doing that, I noticed that the Plex Update Service was not running, and when I tried to start it, it failed. So I think I may have found the source of the problem, but I couldn’t figure out why the update service is failing. Any thoughts?

Are you running PMS as a service or under your own user?

As a user. I’m not doing anything special to run it as a service.

sorry… then I’m out of ideas
