Plex shows Music album year one year earlier than the tag

Server Version#: 1.26.0.5715
Player Version#:

Unsure if this bug has been around for a while as I noticed it today. Plex reports the year of all albums in my music library incorrectly, always one year less than the year populated in the tag. For example, tje tag for Led Zeppelin IV has a year of 1971. All of the Plex clients accessing the server as well as PlexAmp show the year as 1970. Is this a bug or a configuration issue?

Which file format is used for your music?
Which particular meta tag has been set?
Did you actually tell Plex to use what’s in your meta tags, instead of looking them up at musicbrainz.org?

I am not the original poster, but I have been having the same problem over the past couple weeks. Every album’s release year is shown incorrectly (one year before the actual date correct date in every case). I thought I read on Reddit that this was a known issue and that if I would update to the latest BETA version, then the issue would be fixed. But I just tried that. It did not work. The same problem persists (exactly as before). Frustrating.

I meant to add that my setup is set to use local meta data (which is correct)

This is happening to me. When I look at all the albums of an artist, the year listed under the album is incorrect - it is one year earlier. If I look at the metadata, the year is correct.

I set all my tags using mp3tag, which has a tag for year, which is the tag I use.

My file format is .flac

FYI, this seems similar to one of the things being discussed in this thread:

It was confirmed to happen with 1.26.1.5772 too.

So just updated to 1.26.1.5798, and still looks like this happens on music. Album with with 2022-1-1 date shows 2021 as year, change it to 2022-1-2 date and shows 2022 as year…

@Volts wrote a great explanation of the issue in another thread today:

I really hope someone from Plex will be able to acknowledge the problem so it can be fixed in the next released version of PMS. This bug will potentially impact me a lot. I can’t really update past 1.25.9.5721 with this bug in there.

@OttoKerner ?

I just installed a preview of PMS 1.26.2 and I cannot reproduce this bug anymore.
I am told 1.26.2 contains quite a few date-related fixes.
So please be patient until 1.26.2 becomes available.

Great news! Thanks for letting us know

Anybody knows if the bug is fixed in the PMS version that just released?

Or should we wait for 1.26.2 like suggested by @OttoKerner above?

I can’t update if this bug is still present.

Still bugged for me in 1.26.1.5798

Well, looks like it’s yet another PMS version I need to skip then. :frowning:

I’m still on 1.25.9.5721, right before all these disruptive date bugs were introduced.

I had some time this morning so I tested the new 1.26.2.5797 that just released in the beta channel:

And the bug is still there. I refreshed the metadata on an album that has a date of 2003-01-01, and the date shown below the album switched to 2002.

@OttoKerner you said you already checked for this bug in an earlier preview version of 1.26.2 and couldn’t reproduce the issue? I don’t get it. The bug is clearly still there :frowning:

Perhaps there are differences in your testing material. My above questions were never answered:

  • Which file format is used for your music?
  • Which particular meta tag has been set with the date (and which format was used for the date)?
  • Did you actually tell Plex to use what’s in your meta tags, instead of looking them up at musicbrainz.org?
  • Which metadata agent has been selected for this music library?
  1. The format in my case was AAC. But I know in other threads people could reproduce the issue with FLAC files. So it might not matter.
  2. The date was inherited from the file (I think). The ā€œOriginally Availableā€ field is unlocked, and the format is 2003-01-01
  3. I have ā€œPrefer local metadataā€ enabled if it’s what you’re asking.
  4. The metadata agent is ā€˜Plex Music’.

I hope this helps. In the meantime, I’ll revert back to 1.25.9.5721

One last question: which time zone are you / your server in?

Eastern Time

Also, please note that the date below the album switched only after I refreshed metadata, so what @Volts said here seems very accurate:

Eastern Time, that’s UTC-5 right?
I think the negative offset plays a major role in this bug. It might very well be the reason why I cannot repro it, as my time zone offset is positive.
I will forwards these refined findings to the developers.
