Plexamp: every album is showing the year incorrectly (all of them showing 2023)

Every album on my library on Plexamp is showing the wrong year on the now playing screen, showing 2023, but in the library itself is correct.

Already tried installing plexamp on other device, the same error occurs, on other Plex Players (that is not Plexamp) the years are showing correctly.

can you edit info for this album and show a screenshot so we can see what Plex has for the Original Release Date for this entry

The recent change we made was to display the track year if there was one, in advance of supporting that more detailed metadata. See what the track itself looks like.

These are all the metadata that the track has

Paste in the XML for a track.

At the end of the track line i can see that the year is 2023 for some reason, but i don’t know from where it comes

Do you have “prefer local metadata” on? It seems like it’s reading this from somewhere.

originallyAvailableAt="2023-08-25"

Yes, i disabled it, refreshed the metadata and still incorrect.

Create a new library without that option checked, and then scan in a single album and see if the problem persists.

Look like its fixed

But very strange, because the “originallyAvailableAt” show the date that i added the album to the library, so it seems a problem with plex or something.

Did more tests, and looks like the problem its with the “Scanner” and “Agent” options, when on both are on Plex Music it shows the correct year, but when is “Plex Music Scanner” and “Personal Media Artists” respectively, then it shows the wrong year (2023). I did this with 'prefer local metadata" option checked in both cases.

The “Personal Media Artists” agent is not recommended; Plex Music is far superior in many ways.

I’m going to give the Plex Music agent another shot today, as I’m also seeing this same issue in Plexamp. I’ve purposely avoided using Plex Music agent as last time I tried it (maybe 2 years ago) it had a tendency to completely mangle my collection, e.g. splitting albums into 2 and refusing to acknowledge the “Prefer Local Metadata” option in many cases. It wasn’t due to issues with my metadata - if I deleted the library and tried it again with the exact same settings, it would split different albums.

At the time, the older Plex Music Scanner with Personal Media Artists was the only way I could get Plex to read my tags 100% and not randomly split albums. I have no intention of letting Picard loose on my extensively curated large collection of music, as previous attempts using a small test subset of my music have proved fruitless.

But enough moaning - I’ve just set up a test library using Plex Music Agent and will report back tomorrow once it’s finished scanning. Hopefully things will be more satisfactory now.

Quick Update: I’ve just scanned in my smaller CD singles folder using the Plex Music agent, and things seem to be so much better than when I last tried it. Plex seems to be adhering to my “Prefer Local Metadata” option this time. I’ll give it a go on my main Albums folder now

I use it because it don’t show any genre/mood/style that i don’t like to use in my library, besides it let me customize the artists at my way.

Prefer Local Metadata will do that too, and you can pick genres:

I’m still struggling to see how the Plex Music agent is “far superior in many ways”. I created a test library yesterday using the Plex Music agent, and with “Prefer Local Metadata” set. It’s just finished scanning now, and here’s the results:

Logitech Media Server shows 11944 albums with 136273 tracks.
Bluesound shows 11944 albums with 136273 tracks.
Foobar2000 shows 11944 albums with 136273 tracks.
Plex using the old Plex Music Scanner and Personal Media Artists shows 11944 albums with 136273 tracks.

However, Plex using the “superior” Plex Music agent and Prefer Local Metadata shows 11587 albums with 135300 tracks.

So the Plex Music agent is missing 357 albums and 973 tracks. From an initial look at a couple of artists where I have lots of albums (and comparing with LMS, Bluesound and Foobar2000), I can see that Plex is merging albums together based on folder structures rather than Album Name tags, and that it isn’t always using the embedded artwork, despite the library being set to Album Art Local Files Only. This is why some of us still rely on the older Plex Music Scanner with Personal Media Artists… it behaves much better for people who want full control over their tags and library. Plex Music agent is the only software I’ve ever used that tries doing its own thing (actually that’s not quite true: Roon also mangles things by trying to be clever)

It’s not only Plex and Roon, for example Emby also tries to be too clever by splitting /disc1/ and /disc2/ subfolders into separate albums. But yes, the less “intelligence” the less the scanner appears to the user as a black box. This is always my pet peeve around Plex not supporting the Compilation tag: sure you can have a clever algorithm around track artist, album artist, album title, folder structure and file name tags to determine whether an album is a compilation, but it does make things a lot easier (and mif the scanner just reads Compilation = true.

This work towards Plex handling individual track years (and hopefully, track genres) is very positive news btw!

Here’s an example. There’s a Depeche Mode boxset with 4 discs dedicated to different eras, each with their own album title and artwork. Here’s how it’s displayed in Logitech Media Server:

Depeche 1

Plex Music Scanner with Personal Media Artists also displays it this way:

However, here’s what Plex Music agent shows. It’s merged all 4 CDs into a single entry (resulting in the title showing as the first of the 4 discs):

Depeche 2

Drilling down into the single album does show the 4 discs individually, but you lose the disc-specific title and artwork. Despite me telling Plex to Prefer Local Metadata, it seems to be using the folder structure to group the 4 discs into a single entry rather than keep them as 4 separate entries.

I realise this might be getting slightly off-topic, but at the end of the day Plexamp has recently started showing the wrong year in the Now Playing screen if using the older Plex Music Scanner with Personal Media Artists. Rather than resolve the issue, it’s been recommended that we switch to the newer scanner, so I’m just trying to show that there’s valid reasons why some of us stick with the older scanner.

Thanks for the extra information. We generally consider merging multi-disc albums to be a feature  I understand there are those rare cases where there is per-album metadata.
