Plex does not see Synology NAS folder structure

DSM version 7.1-42661
Model DS920+
Plex Version 4.43.4
PC Windows 10

Plex does not see the full path. TV shows are in Volume1\Plex\TV Shows. When I create the path in Plex it will only goto Volume1\Plex. the TV Shows folder does not exist. I created a “TV Shows” folder off of Volume1 so the path was Volume1\TV Show and still had no success with plex seeing the files contained there.
I’ve been running plex and these files for a number of years so its not a naming convention problem.
I have checked that all permissions in “shared folders” are set to read\write.
I opened file explorer in Win10, typed in the appropriate path and all files are accessible from there.

It seems that there is a permission issue that I’m not educated enough to comprehend.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Dale

That sounds like a permission issue.

For what user have you checked the permissions?
On DSM 7, the applicable user should be PlexMediaServer (not plex).

Well, I don’t see a “PlexMediaServer”. Perhaps this is the issue. I did have to create the “Plex” share.
Have I missed a step during installation?

No; just how DSM 7 organizes different account types w/ regards to permission assignment.

I renamed the “Plex” folder to “PlexMediaServer”. Checked in File Station to ensure changes took affect as well as changing the path in Plex. Same issue. Plex does not see the final folder.
It sees
/volume1/PLEXMediaServer
It does not see
/volume1/PLEXMediaServer/TV Shows

I do see however that “PlexMediaServer” does not show up in the Shared Folder Permissions. It is still “Plex”

Setting the permissions has nothing to do with the folder name.
See the instructions in the linked guide on how to properly set permissions on Synology (incl. adding the PlexMediaServer user if needed).

I’m sorry man, what linked guide?

I think I have it. Scanning now. Looks like I hadn’t gone far enough into the permissions. I will post my progress.

Here you go… click on the orange text in the preview box below. Orange text is usually links in the forum.

If I may step in here?

  1. The PlexMediaServer shared folder is for the EXCLUSIVE use by the application
  2. If you want a “Plex” shared folder for media, you are free to use one.

DO NOT DO THIS!

UNDO what you’ve done

This is the web app version.

Which version does PMS show you in Package Center is Installed?

1.21.0.3744-7000 ?

1.21.0-3744 (beta)

Thank you.

  1. 1.21.0.3744-7000 is from the DSM 7 BETA. The app no longer works correctly since DSM was released as 7.0 Final Release

  2. Do you have, either in the “Plex” shared folder or “Plex Media Server” shared folder which has "Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server?

We’ve been trying to get Synology to update Package Center … but they haven’t

No, That is not there.

Is this an upgrade from DSM 6 ?

No, this is the first installation on the system. I bought it a couple months ago.

Thanks… That clears up SOO much.

The path forward is pretty easy.

  1. Rename PlexMediaServer to “Plex”.
  2. You can put all your media in there (Plex shared folder) without issue.
  3. We’ll fix everything else in a bit.

The next thing we’ll do is upgrade you from 1.21.0.3744 to current PMS release so you get a working PMS version.

Do you know which file you need from Plex.tv/downloads (DSM7) category?

Getting you a link to the file you need

You want the Intel 64 bit SPK file

https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.30.0.6442-5070ad484/synology-dsm7/PlexMediaServer-1.30.0.6442-5070ad484-x86_64_DSM7.spk

I have changed it to “Plex” in Shared folder and noted it is changed in File Station.

No I don’t know which file is needed.

Thanks for the link (when you post it)
