I recently updated my QNAP NAS(TS-251+) firmware and Plex Media Server, before that, it had been running for a few years without any issues.
Post update,
Firmware - 4.5.3.1697
PMS Version - 1.21.1
First, I tried updating my existing PMS server and the update went through fine, but when I tried opening it, it simply hung and timed out. Thinking there might have been some issue with the update, I stopped and removed that PMS instance and installed a fresh copy off “All Apps”, but the result is the same, when you try opening it, it just tries to load, and times out.
I tried some troubleshooting, like checking if the n/w access and port are up. Used my Mac Laptop on the same network to try accessing it using "nc -vz " that came back with a success.
So I am not sure what is going on here. Any ideas to troubleshoot this further? Anyone else facing the same issue?
It’s odd you end up with PMS 1.21.1 after updating your server. The latest public release is version 1.23.2.4656.
Not sure what you mean by installing a fresh copy off “All Apps”…
After updating your server: please check it’s actually running (should be showing on the QNAP app center / control center. If the Web app isn’t opening – please check out your server log files (you’ll probably need to get those manually from your QNAP’s file system given you cannot access the web ui).
Yeah, usually the PMS versions in the NAS server’s are lagging by 1 or 2 versions. But i was ok with 1.21., since before update i had 1.13 or something.
I did some more troubleshooting and i guess i seem to have figured out the problem. Here’s what i did, might prove helpful for anyone else that might face similar problems.
I ssh’ed into the installation and checked the logs, there it showed me the following error messages,
Jun 18, 2021 09:49:31.078 [0x7f0525e50780] DEBUG - Completed forward migration 20201103130000.

So clearly there was problem starting the server, but the default port (32400) was still accessible via telnet/nc. Plus when i stopped PMS from QTS Desktop the logs did not update, no indication of “server shutting down” or anything for that matter. It stayed at the above logs.
But when i ran netstat, i could still see a process namely “Plex Media Server” running, which is odd, since i just stopped the server. So then i killed that process and restarted the PMS all over again and that solved the problem.
So what i feel now, looking back, is that stale PMS service was running all along even though on the QTS desktop i see one app for PMS which i started/stopped/removed/etc and that seemed broken and was messing up with the latest app.
