PLEX Streaming - Works in Browser but not in Apps

Server Version#: 4.145.1

Hi there everyone!

I hope im at the right place in this forum.

Following situation:
I did set up my Plex Media Server for Streaming and made it available for the internet.
To achieve that i am using the cloudflared tunnel service from Cloudflare since i do not have a static ip address and the public ip address is shared to multiple users. Thats why i chose the tunnel service.
It was working perfectly, i did connect it to my own domain (lets call it plex.test1234.tech for now) and i can use it in the internet.
It was running on my own pc connected via WLAN to my router.
Now:

I got myself a LTE Router and a sim card so i can split my plex media server to its own internet. It actually has a higher capability then my own router with cable connection.
Following problem:
When i enter the link (plex.test1234.tech) in a browser (PC or phone) it loads the app and i can log in and stream my media.
But if i connect a tv or my own phone via the app from the Google Play Store it does recognize the connection, i can also select media but as soon as it starts to stream it takes around 5-10 seconds loading and i get an error (Source error).
Ive tried to research and tried alot but its not getting into my head why it does work without any problem in my browser but when i want to use it on my tv, it does the said above.

How did i try to connect:

App from the Google Play Store aswell as the TV and the Browser (on my pc or phone) are not in the same network as the Plex Media Server. Therefore all of them have to connect through the cloudflare tunnel i created. Therefore im just confused why it does work in a browser (Google Chrome) but not through the App.
I can also see the session in my dashboard on the server but it is loading, says “Playing” for a second and disappears from the dashboard.

I am really desperate at this point since ive just changed the “internet source” from a cable internet router to my LTE Sim Card Router and did not change anything.

Does anyone know anything to help me get this working?

Thank you in advance!

(btw. i do have the Plex Pass Lifetime, if that does matter at all)

With which exact apps are you experiencing this (platform, version)?
The new mobile apps have introduced a restriction which Plex announced some time ago in their blog (at least some users seem to have also received a related e-mail notification).

From https://www.plex.tv/blog/important-2025-plex-updates/

Beginning on April 29, 2025, users will be able to stream from personal media libraries on a remote network in one of two ways:

Option 1: Remote playback with a Plex Pass

Upgrading to any Plex Pass subscription is a great option for server owners, as it ensures all users accessing the Plex Media Server can stream remotely, without an additional charge. Even if you don’t run your own Plex Media Server, a Plex Pass subscription will not only allow you to stream remotely from any server to which you have access, but also lets you make use of other Plex Pass functionality like Skip Intro and Skip Credits.

Option 2: Remote playback with a Remote Watch Pass subscription (New!)

Our brand-new subscription offering, Remote Watch Pass, allows individual users to remotely stream media from any personal media server to which they have access. This is a great option for users who don’t run their own server and are looking to stream from a server belonging to a friend or family member who does not have a Plex Pass. It’s also a good alternative for server owners who may not need the full feature offering of a Plex Pass, but are looking for a more cost-effective option to access their media remotely. Beginning April 29, 2025, Remote Watch Pass will be available for an introductory price of $1.99/month or $19.99/year.

This should currently only apply to the mobile apps released in April.

“Brother, I’m facing the exact same issue. I’m using a Cloudflared tunnel, and when I try to access Plex over cellular through the iOS app, I can’t see my library — even though I’ve tried everything to fix it. But when I open the proxy domain directly, the library loads fine, so the domain isn’t the problem — the issue is clearly with the app. I’m using iOS, and I’m convinced they messed something up, especially after removing the remote section in this new version. I also have Plex Pass.

Alright, i gathered the information with the devices and apps ive tried it:

PC1 (connected via LAN Cable to a router) - Windows 11:

  • Google Chrome (Version 136.0.7103.49) - opening Plex via my own domain. Works great and i can stream my media.
  • Plex for Windows (from the Windows Store - Version 1.108.1.307-dd5b87aa) - can connect to my PLEX Media Server and can also start the stream of any media on there.

Phone 1 (connected to mobile data and therefore not in the same network as my Plex Media Server) - Android 14

  • Google Chrome (Version 136.0.7103.60 from the Android Google Play Store) - opening Plex via my own domain. Works great and i can stream my media.
  • Plex for Android (Mobile) (Version 2025.15.0 from the Android Google Play Store) - can connect to my Server and i can see the contents which i host on there, but if i start to stream anything (even if i put the resolution on low quality like 240 or 360px) it tries to load the Movie/Video with a blackscreen and gives me an popup saying “Source Error”.

TV1 - Samsung TV Series 8 using the Plex APP (currently dont have the Versionnumber since i have to ask the Family member, but will update it as soon as i have it)

  • same problem like i had on my phone using the plex App

I already thought about the connection from my media server maybe being instable, but then i would have the same problems when i stream in browsers/the windows plex app.
I can also stream there up to 12-18mbps without a problem but on my phone/TV not even with 240kbps, doesnt make sense in my opinion.

But thanks for the reply in advance and i hope we get this fixed!

What i also saw:

The new Plex Pass restrictions are understandable. But since im a Plex Pass Lifetime User i wouldnt be canceled out from Remote Streaming. At least from what i understood.

Looks like im lucky that at least my library is loading in but always gives me the “Source Error” Error when i try to watch anything

I have same issue. Android app on local network works fine and as soon as i switch to remote, it just gets stuck or buffering since the new update. I tried it on friends android tv’s and the issue is reproducible. One friend tried plex on roku and that seems to be working on remote play. So i am 100% sure that the issue is in the android version of the app.

Similar issue on my end. I’m a lifetime Plex pass subscriber, and I can’t see my personal libraries on the Plex app on neither Android phone, Android TV, nor Fire TV. All devices are on the latest available versions.

But if I go to Plex.tv, I can see them and stream them without issue.

This is both on my network and remote. Browser works, apps don’t.

I have the same issue. Plex app on android cannot see my libraries.

So is this a known issue? Are the devs aware?

I rolled back my android Plex app to the March release and I was able to see my libraries locally again, but not remote. Remote still works on my phone browser though.

I am having the same problem here, I cannot access my server remotely via the iOS app. I can see my libraries through the web console…

I am experiencing the same thing despite having a Plex Pass - I’m running the plex server via docker (might be out of date though), but it started failing around the same time frame as everyone else.

I have seen the same issue with all my remote users. I have tried Roku on my cell and a Fire stick on my cell and they work fine. I am going to by brother in laws house tonight who has a Samsung TV with the issue and hopefully between that and my NGINX logs, I can see what is happening. When we tested the other day, there were no requests from his TV to my server.

Appears to be plex.tv. I see in the console log on the Plex TV app that plex.tv is refusing connection from the app.

I tracked down my issue. Apparently the change to charging users for remote access removed all my shared library access. I didn’t realize they were all removed. I added them back and things are working again!

My plexamp is working fine remotely except PLEX iOS app.I’m not even using Tailscale and the PlexAMP works perfectly so I then tried Jellyfin with Tailscale and it streamed flawlessly on my iPhone from my mobile carrier connection.Clearly something is broken when they removed the option to add servers manually on Plex IOS app
