I am a newbie to the Plex world and wanted to clarify something.
I downloaded Plex media server to test it out and was able to stream through my chomrcast to my tv with no issues. It only gave me a limited time and then asked about subscriptions on my iphone…
My understanding is I can pay a one off fee to be able to use Plex from my iphone to control my media library, or I can pay a monthyl subscription, or lifetime pass?
My situation is as follows:
I want to be able to control the media player from my mobile (since we are ditching remote controls, and the PC will remain in the computer room away from the lounge room). I also want my wife to be able to access the Plex media server from her (Android) mobile as well.
Do I just need to pay the one off fee for each of us one time on our mobiles?
Would the monthly subscriptiion be better? would I need to pay that for each of our mobiles?
Or is the lifetime subscription the ultimate and will work for multiple phones, users etc.
I’m just going to be using plex to stream media (bluray and DVDs I burn from disc, or music I have, or paid for downloaded movie files).
The one-time activation fee for mobile devices is per account, per app store. This removes the timeout for video playback. It is not a Plex Pass subscription.
Since you have an iPhone and your wife has Android, that would be two separate activation fees.
Your activation fee covers any iPads or other iPhones tied to your iTunes account.
Your wife’s activation fee covers any other mobile Android devices (phone/tablet) tied to her Google Play Store account.
There is no switching between app stores. For example, if your wife were to get an iPhone on a separate iTunes account, it would be a separate activation fee. No coverage from yours and no transferring from Google.
The Android apps are also available via the Amazon app store.
You can also purchase a Plex Pass via a monthly or yearly subscription or via one-time fee.
Among other things, the Plex Pass unlocks all mobile apps using your Plex.tv account, so you would not need to pay the activation fee.
You can also set up Plex Home, which lets you share your Plex Pass with your wife. She would inherit your Plex Pass rights, so the activation fee would not be needed for her mobile devices.
