Hi.
I am coming from Emby, and wanted to setup my media library in Plex. However the horror, when I found out that Plex on Apple TV 4K does NOT support 4096x2160p 4K content, but has an artificiel software limitation on 3840x2160p. See picture attached.
Why would you put this SW limitation, when the apple tv 4K is perfectly capable to support 4096 in HW? This is even stated in the specs of the Apple processor.
The files play perfectly fine in emby, vlc, etc. and other media players on the Apple TV. So the issue is clearly with Plex.
I have installed testflight, and would like to try to install an updated player, if you remove the SW limitaton.
Otherwise keep up the good work, as plex seems to be a good product overall👍
Also just FYI, the android app also has this limitation. However the web view does not have this limitation.
Please give me the option in plex player settings to turn off this artifical limitation which is unneeded, and goes against the term 4K(4096x2160p) and actually is UHD(3840x2160p).
Can anyone from officiel developer team please confirm this bug.
It should be really really easy to fix. It’s one variable in the Apple TV app code which needs to be changed from 3840 to 4096.
I raised this problem to the team (other Plex apps have the same hardcoded resolution for 4k UHD) and we’re gonna look into this, but there shouldn’t be a problem and we’ll very probably make the change
This topic was discussed and agreed with devs from all platforms, so now it’s just a matter of time Different platforms have different backlogs (different tasks to do or bugs to fix) so release times may vary a bit.
If you need more info about it, I recommend you to post a thread in the Android “subforum”, that might be more effective
