Plex Transcoder crashes, quite often and irregularly

Server Version#: 1.16.2.1321
Player Version#: chromecast

Running Windows Server 2016

I’ve been recently (2 months ago) started to have increasing amount of problems with plex transcoder crashing. Sometimes, this even crashes the server, giving it a hard restart.

See attached logs of a crash that occured 23:25 or the minute before Plex Media Server Logs_2019-07-23_23-25-27.zip (1.5 MB)

With the associated windows dmp Plex Transcoder.exe.5036.rar (261.4 KB)

This is the third crash in this specific movie (this crash is after 1h 16min played). I had a crash after 1h 14min played. I took a 5min sample and added it to a library but could not crash in the same spot (ca 4min into the sample).

I can PM the link to the movie sample if you wish to download (made with MKVToolNix).

When the server crashes completely there’s not much info apart from a minidump. Here’s from when the server crashed 1h14min into the movie 072319-19734-01.rar (148.5 KB)

Please help, this is getting very frustrating!

Could be corrupt.
Download ffmpeg(free), extract, then open a command window in the bin folder, and run the following.

ffmpeg.exe -v error -i "TheFullPathNameOfFile.ext" -f null -

Hello, Thank you for your time and the tip. I’ve downloaded ffmpeg and have run the command line you suggested on both the sample file and the entire file - with no error message in return.

I’d just like to state that I’ve been trying to resolve the crashes for a long time now and nothing works. Nothing indicates it’s problems with the MKV’s.

I’ve now reverted back to an older version of Plex Media Server 1.9.3.4290-9798172d4 and now Plex is working flawlessly again without crashing the server.

I could probably how installed a later version because these crashes started happening around May this year - but just happy that I now have a working server again.

Have you tried PMS 1.18.0 (currently in Plex Pass Beta) ?

Yes it was after upgrading to latest version (now with the latest changes to transcoding) that I felt a fix was nowhere near in sight. So reverted back.

I don’t hw transcode by the way.
