Plex TV Series Scanner results in wrong names for Multi-Part Episodes in 'The Weekenders'

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6316-f4cdfea9c
Player Version#: Version 4.92.0

I upgraded to the new Plex TV Series scanner awhile back but didn’t pay too much attention to how it affected my TV series episode matching. Recently, I started watching a bunch of favorite Halloween episodes and discovered that a number of series aren’t behaving as expected

More concerning is there doesn’t seem to be much leeway for the user to fix the issues that pop-up, but this may just be my inexperience with the new scanner

The issue I’m reporting here is that the series ‘The Weekenders’ is getting two-part episode names when it used to get the individual episode part names directly from TVDB. It’s not experience breaking, but it’s ugly and I thought there would be an easy way to fix it.

Note the following image:

Note that approximately every other episodes is name ‘NameX/NameY’ with the other episodes still displaying their expected name. From what I can tell, this is happening because the new Plex TV Series scanner is deciding to get data from both TVDB and TMDB, when it really shouldn’t.

TVDB enforces that multi-part episodes be split into parts and lists them as such. When checking the TVDB listing for episode names, notice now episodes are named in combination with a slash:

TMDB, however, lists these multi-part episodes as a whole and combines them using a slash, as seen here:

I cannot see anywhere on TVDB using the combined naming convention, so I’m assuming the Plex scanner found the combined names on TMDB
Thus, the obvious solution would be to turn off TMDB’s influence on this series, however, I can’t seem to find a way to do this. Setting the series to use the TVDB order still fetches naming information from TMDB, which doesn’t make much sense since the two name orderings are wholly incompatible

On the library level, I don’t see any way to shut off the TMDB influence on my TV library as a whole ( as I could with the old scanners via the Agents - > Shows menu. )

What’s extra weird is that the Plex did not apply the combined names to all odd or all even episodes uniformly, so I’m puzzled as to how it decided which episodes would receive a combined name instead of the singular name I would prefer

Finally, not all series with combined episodes are having this issue with the new scanner. I’ve noticed Adventure Time and Garfield and Friend appear as expected despite also being combined episodes. This appears to be because TMDB is inconsistent with how multi-part episodes should be handled, and handles these episodes the same way TVDB handles them

Does anybody have any ideas how I can fix this?
Is the only solution to chop up the TMDB entries for these episodes so they match TMDB?

Thanks,

-Ed

Click the pencil on the show poster and go to advanced

You can change it to the TMDB show order there.

Thanks @JaysPlex ,

Unfortunately I cannot find those options.

I was looking for exactly those options as I am familiar with them from before my library was upgraded, but I can’t seem to find them when using the new Plex TV Series scanner.

My settings for this library are as follows:

And the only options I see under ‘Episode ordering’ are as follows:

Unfortunately, changing from ‘The Movie Database’ to ‘The TVDB’ in that menu does not seem to have any effect on the episode names, even after refreshing the metadata or re-scanning the library. Though one would expect it would.

If you have found a way to select The TVDB (DVD) and The TVDB (Absolute) when using the new Plex TV Series scanner, that is exactly what I have been looking for!
Could you please show me how you get those other options when using the new Plex TV Series scanner?

I’m sorry I tried some test files and I see what you’re saying now. The TVDB should be displaying those episodes individually which is what you want?

I thought you had them named as combined episodes and wanted them that way

This does appear to be a bug. You should be able to name those shows as individual shows and use the TVDB order without any problem

The settings you’re seeing with the DVD order are at the show level, not the library level if you think that will fix it. You click the pencil in the show poster

Edit: I tried the DVD order and Absolute order for TVDB and neither fixed the problem.

I think someone from Plex is going to have to intervene to fix this

Oh you are right I do still have those options at the show level !

It looks like I had found them earlier because I had the show set to TVDB (DVD). I tried all of the options but none of them seem to have effected the naming issue, so I think you may be right, maybe this is a bug?

Yeah it’s a bug.

Like you suspected, it’s some kind of miscommunication between the two different sources

The TVDB and TMDB are fighting and it looks like it ended in a split decision.

Half from each isn’t gonna work

The issue here is that TMDB was linking to the TVDB ids even though they really shouldn’t have been as the two-parters are split into two episodes on TVDB. What I’ve done is just removed the TVDB id references on the TMDB episodes which should hopefully fix this problem.

Give our database a day or two to update after these changes then ensure your episode ordering is set correctly and refresh the metadata.

Thanks @drzoidberg33 , I will test this solution over the next few days and report back in this thread with the results

@drzoidberg, I’ve tried the ‘Plex Dance’ with ‘The Weekenders’ (removed the series from the TV library, re-scanned the library so it no longer appeared, emptied the trash to clear any information about it in my local database, re-added the series, and re-scanned)

Unfortunately, the same double-name issue persists.

I checked TMDB and it doesn’t look like your changes weren’t reverted. Some of the episodes I see with double names don’t have External IDs for TVDB linked there

This could be a timing thing, so I will try again in a few days. Based on your post time, it has been three days since you made the change, I’ll try again in another three days

I tried refreshing metadata on ‘The Weekenders’ again today and this issue is now fixed! Plex Dance was not required to get the updates, just metadata refresh

Thank you @drzoidberg33 !
