Server update never completes via GUI

Server Version#:1.24.5.5173
Running in Windows 10

Hi all,

Ok so this is getting a bit old now so I figured I would ask for some help. In the past 3mo or so every time there is a new version of Plex I click on download, it downloads fine… then I click on install… and it appears to be installing and when it loads back up I am still at the same version.

Ok so I manually download the new version and manually install it into the same folder and then it works… until the next server update where I have the same issue again… rinse and repeat… I’d really like to be able to just update normally as the product was designed to do.

Any advice for this issue?

Thanks in advance

Have you manually shut down PMS or restarted your computer anytime since this started? The update through the Web app is controlled by another program running in the background called Plex Update Service. This doesn’t get shutdown when you install a newer version and the old version keeps running. There have been times when this service doesn’t work right and if you are still running an old version you get the same results.

Alternatively, are you running PMS as a service? The updater does not work in that case.

Thanks for the reply. I did but just for kicks I just restarted the server again and I am having the same issue. I am not running PMS as a service.

Can you provide your PMS logs from this recent attempt?

Sure thing, here it is. Not sure if you needed all of them or not.

Oh. You do not have debug logging enabled on your server. Please enable that first, try to do the auto update, and get me a new log. Providing the zip is perfect.

Sorry, debug enabled as requested

Can you restart your PMS, wait 3 minutes, grab new logs? I’d like to check that PMS is loading properly.

I see something odd.

E:\[Plex Media Server]\AppData\Plex Media Server

Is that really where your AppData folder is or are you masking it out for privacy?

Shut down PMS, waited and restarted. Tried update again.
Here are new logs

Yes that is a valid path, always been there from day 1 and updated fine using that path for over a year. Appdata is 50GB+ so I needed to put it on another drive. This is a large library and the entire drive is dedicated to PMS.

Did you move the PMS install folder to E:\[Plex Media Server] too? I don’t think you can put the AppData folder within the install folder.

Always been there, working fine over a year across multiple updates until this update issue started happening recently.

E:[Plex Media Server] is where the app lives.

E:[Plex Media Server]\AppData\Plex Media Server is where the appdata lives.

Is Plex Update Service running? Not the updater, just the service.

No, it is not started (set to automatic)

If I try to start it I get this:

I think you are on to something

Exit PMS and make sure all Plex related programs are closed from the task manager. Then repair the install of PMS. When that launches see if the update service is running.

Do you mean just manually reinstall into the same folder or is there a repair option?

if you go to windows control panel/settings > add remove programs > search for plex media server > modify > then choose repair from the setup/uninstall dialog.

windows 11 (10 should be similar)

click repair button

Hmmm… When I click repair it opens a window asking me for PMS.exe… not sure what it is doing… Assuming it wants the setup file… should I point it to the newest version I just downloaded manually?

EDIT: I found the same 1.24.5.5173 PMS setup file and pointed it to that, it completed the repair. Plex update service is running now :). Trying update again now.

Huh, the previous service logs showed it was looking for the exe at

E:\Plex Update Service.exe

That’s not right. Can you check where this file is?

I don’t know, but your question leads me to believe that there are some paths somewhere in windows and/or plex config that are pointing to the wrong place.

Also, to re-iterate, and just because ‘it was working before’ is irrelevant, you absolutely should not have the data folder inside the application folder. Application and data should be in separate paths.

e:\plex app folder\
e:\plex data folder\
