I’ve got movies I recorded with last summer’s version of Plex that Plex streams without any issues. I had problems once before with playback after an update and then another update got me back into streaming my recorded media. When Plex goes bad it will playback for 5 minutes, start pixelating, then chocking the picture into rectangles and then the audio gets out of sync before the playback freezes. The recording will be useless. That is a CODEC issue. What I could wish for is the previous versions of Plex/Passport to find a version that works. Relying on the forums for support gives conflicting advice on how to fix this issue.
Thanks for your input. What I did today seems to have restored my PMS. My main PMS runs on an i3 desktop and an update to that installation was my problem, or so I thought. I use Plex to stream from the PC to an nVidia Shield. The nVidia has PMS as a default app that you can not delete. I wasn’t using the nVidia PMS. Update for the nVidia and let the PMS set up the DVR folders, uninstall the server updates on the PC’s PMS and then let it update when Plex offered the updates. Logged in as the admin user on the nVidia and also logged in as admin user on the PC. The admin user has the Plex/Pass. The PC admin user is seeing the nVidia server. The nVidia admin user sees the PC server. I can use DVR from either server. The recordings save to the two distinct platforms’ file system. I have to switch servers on whatever platform I am navigating for the playback files. Foggy, but it works.
One surprise for me is the nVidia recorded a TV show without the appliance being turned on. The PC must be turned on with PMS running for any recording. The stuttering videos I recorded are still unusable. The new recordings are some of the best quality that Plex has done for me.
I write this in hopes it will enlighten someone else.
The Shield Android system has System apps pre-installed with Plex PMS being one of them. One cannot delete any of the System apps. The Shield is always on but it has limited storage. One has to use the Google Play Store to add the Plex client app.
I’ll have you know at the university by the end of the second year we had to declare choice for either database or code-monkey. Give me Java / C / C++ / .net / python / PERL / COBOL. The LAMP and WAMP frameworks were not my favorite at all. Plex has done magic with their database setup.
