My setup is LAN only, and I don’t have PlexPass. I have a few 3D movies in my library alongside a regular 2D copy. For each movie, I have a folder named correctly, and the files are in there. Each video file has the naming convention of () - .mkv where metadata is usually the cut of the film and resolution. E.g:
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - 1080p.mkv
- Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - 3D Full-SBS 1080p.mkv
Plex Web does not show all variants. It chooses what it thinks is the “highest quality” variant and only “allows” me to play that. Nevermind my opinions about that artificial limitation. So, because the 3D Full-SBS 1080p is actually double the width of the standard 1080p, it picks this one and calls it 4K. It isn’t. I’ve been searching and reading this morning. Looks like there isn’t a naming convention for 3D media that is recognized by Plex. JF recognizes my 3D files as 3D and says as much in the web UI, but I don’t think it’s based on the metadata in the file name.
Not sure what to do here. I mean, obviously I’m not watching 3D content via Plex web, so I guess it’s just not being filtered out and ignored. Is there anything I can do to have Plex pick the flat 1080p as the better option?
Split the movies to list them separately. Edit the names (pencil icon) and add 2D/3D/etc. to the Plex listing.
Plex will still consider them one movie. Play progress will show the same for both versions (if you play one for 30 min, both will show played for 30 min).
But for cases where I have a mix of like Theatrical 3D 1080p, Theatrical 1080p, and Theatrical 720p variants of movies, won’t that split each one into a separate listing? In this hypothetical example, I’d only want to split out the 3D edition. Really, I don’t even want to do that but if it’s all that Plex leaves me with…
Here’s your options:
Option 1: Play Version
Supported by Plex Web and some other clients (I don’t have a list of which do/don’t support this). You can choose the version to play. It is in the “three dots” menu. See the screenshot in Merge or Split Items. I haven’t tried this in awhile. I’m not sure if it displays info in the file name. It might just display the resolution, which would not be much help if the 2D and 3D are the same.
Option 2: Merge or Split Items
See the support document. It has a section on merging movies. You might be able to merge the 2D versions back together, keeping the 3D version separate.
Option 3: Multiple Editions. Plex Pass required.
This would make it easy. Tag 3D movies as separate editions. Plex tracks them separately. No split/merge required.
Ahh, I missed the Play Version menu item! I can work with that.
Thank you!
