Just tried watching a movie only to find the surround wasn’t working, just stereo. Directly playing the video file gives surround, and other formats like AAC also have 5.1. Am I missing something or this broken/bugged?
Web browsers don’t have DTS decoders. Neither have they the ability to “passthrough” the DTS packets to an external decoder over HDMI.
If you want surround sound support and/or passthrough, download and install the dedicated Plex client app. Link at the bottom.
I stopped using the plex app because they said the web app was more actively developed and kept up to date. But then I guess they depreciated 2 of the apps in favor of a new app that may or may not be kept up to date? I don’t understand why there’s like 5 different methods of using Plex all in different stages.
The current Plex desktop apps, Plex for Windows/Mac/Linux (docs), and Plex HTPC (docs), are actively developed. Both were updated in May. Both are more full featured than Plex Web, which is limited by the web browser itself.
Plex for Win/Mac/Linux has a look and feel similar to Plex Web. Plex HTPC is targeted towards home theater PCs, and has a look and feel similar to Plex’s smart TV apps.
The Plex app from the Windows store was deprecated quite some time (years) ago.
Plex Media Player, which had not been updated in 2+years, was recently replaced by Plex HTPC.
Well, immediately I ran into the issue that it’s the only program I’ve seen that doesn’t work with windows fullscreen and snapping hotkeys, which I didn’t even know was possible.
