Plex Web shows an unexpected error has occurred

I think I have found a bug within the plex Web application.

Everytime I sign into the plex Web app the home page displays “an unexpected error has occurred” with a warning.

I have tried everything from the server side including fixing the database and creating a fresh install of plex.

I have tried to reset the side bar customisation through the client-setup however that won’t work because everytime I try to it redirects to the same message on the home page that an unexpected error has occurred.

The home page works perfectly fine on a guest account that’s part of the same home and works perfectly fine in the mobile application.

My personal user account also works fine in the mobile application. Just won’t work on the plex Web application.

Any thoughts on the root cause or is this a genuine bug right after I got plex pass?

Have you restarted the server and other apps?

Plex Pass features are passed down from Plex.tv → Server/App as it starts.

Plex.tv doesn’t use a “push” mechanism so the change isn’t instant.

Yh I’ve tried that and everything else I could think of.

If I remove the server and delete it from my user account I still receive the same error message on the home page.

Furthermore, other accounts seemed to be affected thst are part of my home group.

Please create a tar.gz of the Logs directory (under Plex Media Server) and attach it here. I’ll look and see what it’s not liking

I hope this is the logs you meant. please let me know if anything else is needed.

Can you try a different browser and report if the issue persists across browsers, or if it is local to a specific one?

Yes I have tried it on many different browsers: safari, chrome, Edge, opera.

The only way I have been able to resolve it is by following these steps:

  1. Delete your plex server.

  2. Unlink the server from your plex account.

  3. Wait a few hours so the home page error goes.

  4. Start a new plex server.

  5. Link the server to your account.

Those are the steps I had to take to fix the issue. The issue seems to be persistent but I’m not sure if it is reproducible in house.

You definitely shouldn’t need to delete your server.

Can you clarify if you’re using https://app.plex.tv or your local PMS web app?

Yes, I can clarify it happens on both the sources. https://app.plex.tv and the local pms Web app as a local host.

Thanks for the clarification.

A shot in the dark: When you load other clients that work, do you have any Watch Together sessions active?

Edit: Also, just for completeness sake, can you reproduce the error when you try to use https://app.plex.tv in a chrome incognito window?

When this issue occurs on plex Web, The android and IOS are affected but not all the times. I’ve noticed sometimes it works and sometimes it does not and on those occasions the watch together sessions is not active, it just gives a message saying your libraries are empty or unable to load.

Yes, I’ve reproduced the error using incognito. I would rather not reproduce the error again because I’m currently actively using plex. But I can clarify it also occurs in incognito.

That is interesting you report it also occasionally happens to iOS and Android. I took a look at the logs you shared about a week ago, however I didn’t see any failed requests in those logs.

They only covered a range of a few hours.

If possible, could you share PMS logs during a time where you can reproduce the issue in iOS or Android, and where Plex Web is also failing?

Same issue here I’m sad to report. Tried hard reboot, various cleanups, different browsers, logging out then in and yet it’s the error persists.

At first desktop launch I get the following error (shown here as 1st image): "Something went wrong. There was an error loading your home screen. Please try again in a few minutes.

I do what the error message suggests and try again and the resulting error is as follows (shown here as 2nd image): “There was an unexpected error. Please visit our forums if you continue to experience problems. Go to Forums.”

I can perform a search but no results appear other than perhaps some music titles; no movies, no web shows, no news, no podcasts…nothing. This was working several days ago.

I asked a friend to share his library with me as a test and that works without issue.

I’d be grateful for a solution or at least an idea of root-cause.

Thanks in advance.

I actually gave up with plex because of this, I don’t want to waste anymore time trying to fix an issue which is unfixable. But in my case when I was invited to another server it still showed the same message? Only the developers know solution to this. I hope they fix it ASAP.

Hi Nazerfaze,

Just curious if this issue has been resolved for you and if so how was it resolved.

I am experiencing the same issue. Mine only seems to be browser related.
Same error on all devices and browsers:

“Something went wrong”
“There was an error loading your home screen. Please try again in a few minutes”

Verified with 2 computers, iPhone 7+, Galaxy tablet using multiple browsers and even tried in private or incognito.

My Plex Server Version: 1.31.1.2262-74fdc6b7

Plex Server Running on: Synology DS918+ (DSM 6.2.4-25556) 8GB RAM, 512GB Cache, 10+ TB Storage (3.3 TB free)

Affected Devices / Browsers:

Windows 10: (same on two different computers)

  • Edge
  • Firefox

iPhone 7+:

  • Edge
  • Safari

Galaxy Tab:

  • Chrome

UnAffected Devices / App:

Windows 10:

  • Plex app (v 1.31.1)

iPhone 7+:

  • Plex app (v 7.18)

Galaxy Tab:

  • Plex app (v 8.18.2.25850)

Roku:

  • Plex app (v 6.7 build 28)

Definitely, browser related and only related to my profile (after further testing it is Browser related but not related to just my profile). I have tried accessing it in the browser via directly using my internal IP and port as well as app.plex.tv and there is no difference.

I have rebooted my Plex Server multiple times.

I can run in any browser using my local network and not login to my account and the home screen loads for the non-user just fine and has tracked everything fine. (However you cannot skip intros without logging in with a paid account)

I also created a guest account using another email address and accessing via app.plex.tv and that home screen is unaffected as well. (Edit: After doing more testing with this profile and playing more videos and checking the home screen again, I am now getting the same error)

Definitely browser and my primary account (Lifetime Plex Pass Account).

I noticed this happened after doing a Plex Server update and I think I had a browser open and logged into Plex at the time I was upgrading the Plex server. Maybe this caused the WEB/Profile to become corrupt on the Plex server?

I hope this additional info helps.

Thanks,
Mike

I wanted to do an update on my issue.

I installed the newest Plex app “Plex for Windows” (v 1.31.1.2262-74fdc6b7) on my Windows 10 computer.
This app shows the same error that the web browser shows. I guess the new app uses the HTML that the browser uses?

The Plex Media Player for Windows Home Theater PCs (V 2.58.0.1076-38e019da) shows my Home screen just fine.

By the way, I have a new Synology coming and I am going to rebuild my Plex and let you know what happens.

Same issue as listed, been a few weeks and I just gave up for a while.
Can only access Plex served movies/tv/podcasts/music but nothing local on external HD attached to iMac which has worked just fine for years, even after updating the iMac.

Updated server, no luck.
Tried deleting libraries and relinking no luck.
Tired different browsers, no luck.
Tired access from iPhone, no luck same errors.
