Thanks for you help.
I had same issue like @007fred50 and now Plex Media Server is working in my Synology DS223.

Thank you so much

Hello @007fred50 @ChuckPa , maybe you could help me.
Whenever I try to create a new library, I am not able to see the folders inside the main shared folder.
Do you know what could I do?
Best regards.

Hello

you need to set this here:

Step1: Control Panel
Step2: Shared Folder → Create Folder
Step3: edit folder
Step4: Go to Permissions tab
Step5: select dropdown menu (Local Users) → System Internal user
Step6: find PlexMediaServer select Read/Wrtie

now it should work.

wish it works for you.

Bset Regards

Thank you so much to both @ChuckPa @007fred50
I did both solutions and everything works perfect

So sorry. I am totally new at this topic. I bough the NAS last week.
Thanks for your support.

An update for the NAS server appear. Do you recommend to do it? It would be the Version 1.32.0.6973. Yesterday I installed the version you send us @ChuckPa

no don’t update. the only version working is what chuck put together for you. i’d guess the update would fail anyway.

I was figuring that. that’s why I ask. thanks

QA has approved my changes.

I am waiting for Engineering to approve and then include the DS223 in the next PMS release.

I should be able to get an updated build for you next week.

If really critical, i can hand-craft one but this isn’t usually needed.
It’s often better to sit back a release or two.

ALL:

Current PMS BETA (Build 7088) now includes support for DS223 (rtd1619 family CPUs)

I’ve just downloaded the Armv8 version on my DS223. I copied across and replicated my libraries from my DS220J but a lot fo the files aren’t showing even though they’re in the folders I’ve checked they play with VLC Plater when launched on my Mac. What do I need to do to get this version of Plex to read these files?

The SYNO FAQ contains most everything anyone will need for daily administration of their server.

This doesn’t help in my case - I right-click Properties in the Shared Folder but PlexMediaServer already exists there with Read and Write already selected but still it’s only recognising certain files without any logic (i.e. it’s not the case that it ignores certain extensions as it’s ignoring files at random, seemingly)

Please do NOT touch the PlexMediaServer shared folder
That contains your PMS server data (all your metadata and databases)
It’s managed by DSM now in DSM 7.
If you screw with it, it’ll break.

You give “SYSTEM INTERNAL USER” PlexMediaServer permission to READ the SHARED FOLDERS containing your media

This is what’s being shown to you in the FAQ/How-To linked above.

Follow the steps exactly as shown and it will work.

I didn’t “screw” with PlexMediaServer, I follow the instructions: Shared Folder - Edit - Permissions - System internal user - and then I see PlexMediaServer is already ticked “Read/Write” but it’s not showing all my files, so what’s the issue here?

Please name a shared folder which contains your media.

I’ll write you a step by step so it clicks to how you use Plex.

(sorry if I sounded terse. I see the wildest things here in the forum)

No worries, I’ve just been trying to figure this out for a couple hours and ended up going round and round. My Shared Folder is called Family (within that in File Station I created a folder “Plex Movies & TV” and within that are all of my different plex folders according to whether they are Movies or TV Shows).

I’m really stumped, I’ve been using Plex now for a couple years on my Mac and had it running successfully on first attempt on the DS220J so I’m really stuck as to what the issue is with the DS223 - could it be that for some reason this version of Plex doesn’t like certain file name structures??

Thanks for your help btw!! (It’s midnight here in the UK so I’m off to bed now), will be back to tackle this again in the morning

OK..

here’s how.

  1. You have the existing shared folder “Family”

  2. I’m showing you shared folder “340”. You use “Family”
    – Control Panel - Shared folder
    – EDIT the Family shared folder
    – Permission tab
    – Change “Local User” to “System Internal User” (it’s a dropdown)
    – You’ll see ‘PlexMediaServer’
    – Check the box for ‘PlexMediaServer’

    – Click SAVE (This grants permission to the shared folder)

  3. Now we’re going to force all permissions for all media in the “Family” shared folder to allow Plex. (this is a permissions reset)
    – FileStation
    – Highlight Family
    – Right-click → Properties
    – Permissions tab
    – You now see ‘PlexMediaServer’ has Read access to the shared folder.

  4. Check the box in the lower left corner: “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files”

  5. Click “Save” (this will take a moment)

  6. You will see it “saving” as it applies the permissions

  7. If you’ve already created a library section that points into “Family” all you need to do is “Scan files”. PMS will start seeing the media and adding it.

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed, step-by-step breakdown. I followed it step by step (the only real change I saw from what I had before was that I was changing PlexMediaServer permission from Read & Write to Read) but still it’s not picking up the missing files that were visible on my previous libraries.

For example, I have the folder structure Family > Plex Moves & TV > Documentaries. In the Documentaries folder I have around 20 files that I’ve never had an issue viewing but now Plex only shows me 4 of them. I’ve checked they’re not corrupted by right-clicking and playing them on vlc media player from that folder on my Mac without an issue.

I’m really stumped. I’ve asked Plex to rescan the folders several times but no luck.

(I should also add, I have another sub-folder that contains VIDEO_TS that the previous Plex installations I had - on Mac and older NAS - couldn’t read but this version does! So I’m guessing this issue has something to do with the particular version of Plex that I installed.)
