Hi wanting to have some understanding of what the order of PlexAmps DSP operations are? If I have volume levelling active and eq for my headphones is volume levelling applied first then eq or the other way around? Is the preamp applied at the end?
Yes it does if your applying preamp headroom in the EQ as your lowering overall volume again if it’s after replay gain adjustments and can lead to over attenuation. So if you have replay gain of -6.8 before there is not really a need to apply preamp reduction in the eq side if the preamp needs to be adjusted via -4 as that’s the highest peak adjustment in the EQ. This preamp is auto set if using AutoEq presets. My overall output is very low as a result compared to Roon where I know the order of operations and you can use Volume levelling to manage the headroom for the eq rather than adjust preamp gain.
if i recall correctly, Plexamp makes loudness leveling adjustments at the album level (and it only reduces loudness, never increases) … are you also using volume leveling at album level in Roon?
Yes use Auto in Roon, where it uses album level when you play an album, uses track level if you start just playing a track or it’s on a radio play.
They recommend to manage headroom for DSP by using manual headroom adjustment or using Volume levelling but not both together. You would only do this if the corrections are still causing clipping as the reduced volume level isn’t sufficient. But -18db Lufs seems to be more than sufficient to handle most things without additional headroom.
