When I play audio files (or any video content) through the standard Plex windows app, the audio comes out of the rear speakers fine. But closing it, immediately opening up the Plexamp windows app and playing the exact same files from my server, the audio only comes out of the front speakers. The audio itself sounds fine from the speakers that it is coming out of.
Both apps are set to “system default” for audio output. Not a whole lot of other options to mess with, so I’m a little unsure where to look.
Plexamp doesn’t have any proprietary surround sound decoders. So Atmos, DTS, AC3 etc. files won’t play in surround.
You can play multi-channel WAV or flac files though. (if your sound interface has indeed a surround speaker configuration):
Plexamp won’t do audio passthrough over SP/DIF or HDMI either.
Right, well as I said in the original post, the main Plex windows app does play stereo on my surround system. So yes, my sound interface is “indeed a surround speaker configuration”. And I’m playing the same files through both apps, getting surround sound in one but not the other. Just my computer speakers, straight out of the back of my PC.
So, does that mean the main Plex app has (and requires) a surround sound decoder to play on my surround system, but Plexamp doesn’t have that? If that’s the case, is this something Plexamp will be adding eventually?
