Plexamp fails to launch in Ubuntu 20.04

I had an older version of the AppImage, v1.1.0 that ran successfully in 18.04, but after upgrading to the new LTS, 20.04, it failed to launch. I tried downloading the new version, 3.0.3, but this fails too. Launching it through CLI I get the below output:

Couldn’t install shortcut for Shift+CommandOrControl+Space.
Couldn’t install shortcut for Shift+Command+Control+Option+0.
Couldn’t install shortcut for Shift+Command+Control+Option+1.

Found a fix in another thread.

via alex37330

launch with this paremeter: --disable-seccomp-filter-sandbox

it works, though you have to use the parameter every time you launch it. I’ll probably end up just making a shortcut for it. Hopefully Plex Labs folks will implement a builtin fix but it will work until then.

Same issue …

ab@thor:~/Apps$ ./Plexamp-3.1.0.AppImage --disable-seccomp-filter-sandbox
Couldn't install shortcut for Shift+CommandOrControl+Space.
Couldn't install shortcut for Shift+Command+Control+Option+0.

I am getting the same errors on Arch Linux on my desktop, however, I do not need to use the launch option on my laptop. It runs flawlessly on my laptop but not on my desktop. Both running the latest updates on Arch Linux.

This doesn’t work for me.

Ubuntu 20.04: 5.4.0-33-generic

I am also having this issue.

Having this problem as well. Same errors (“Couldn’t install shortcut…”) on my desktop, but it works on a laptop.

Both computers running Linux Mint 20.

–disable-seccomp-filter-sandbox does not work.

Same issue here, On Ubuntu 20.04. laptop
-disable-seccomp-filter-snadbox did not help.
Is Plex looking into this.

Try this:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.1.0.2o ~/bin/Plexamp-3.?.?.AppImage --disable-seccomp-filter-sandbox

This works on my Fedora 32 workstation.

You may need to change the location of libcrypto.so.1.0.2o. In Ubuntu it would probably be in /usr/lib. And of course the location of the AppImage itself.

Note that if you have previously tried and failed to launch the AppImage, you may need to remove Plexamp’s existing settings before parameters like --no-sandbox will allow Plexamp to launch:

Per https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-amp-3-01-on-ubuntu-16-04-just-displays-a-blank-screen-on-start/580342/26:

Deleting everything under ~./config/ seems like a bit of a nuclear option… maybe try removing just the program’s settings instead. :wink:

After some tinkering, I have managed to get Plexamp running on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with these steps:

  1. Delete any existing Plexamp configuration to start over from scratch, just in case.
    (rm -rf ~/.config/Plexamp/)
  2. Launch Plexamp with the --no-sandbox parameter using the CLI of your choice and sign in
  3. Optionally, add the parameter to your system’s relevant *.desktop file to make running Plexamp a little easier in the future.

To always launch Plexamp with sandboxing disabled, add the --no-sandboxparameter from Step 2 to the first Exec= line in the Desktop Entry section:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Plexamp
Exec=/path/to/Plexamp.AppImage --no-sandbox
Terminal=false
Type=Application

Now, you can start Plexamp without using the CLI at all.

Note: Desktop files are what make launcher shortcuts work; they’re usually stored in ~/.local/share/applications/… just look for a file with Plexamp in the name.
