Plexamp Mix Building Local vs. Shared

So, from my reading I have inferred Plexamp/Mix Builder will look at shared (external) libraries for Similar Artists / content to build a wider mix. Is there a logical reason it doesn’t look across local distinct music libraries the same way?

Use case for me is I have Live Music / Studio-Recorded in two different libraries but there are Artists with valid matches in both places, being able to optionally have those available in a mix but the implementation seems to explicitly prevent this, which is fine just wanting to understand the thinking here before I think about possibly reworking things on my end to take advantage of new features.

Thanks!

It is assumed that the user has a good reason to separate the music into different libraries. So the mixer is respecting that decision.

If you on the other hand want both live and studio recordings to be played within the same queue, why did you separate them in the first place?

They are separated because up until recently rescans of particular artists would cause massive problems with updating libraries because it would want to rescan every album in an artist folder. Keeping them apart for the sanity of running library updates was the only thing I could do to keep it managable.

Things have changed, Plex has evolved, the features that make these mixes possible didn’t even exist when I came up with that library layout. I had a good reason. Plex has changed, I could try and read the devs’ minds or I could just ask here.

Is having “allow this library to be used in mixes” as a flag a huge lift?

This I cannot estimate. You are definitely not the first to ask about it, so I gave you the answer from back then.

@elan knows pretty much what this will entail.

no current plans to add that setting, not least because (as you state yourself) reasons for keeping separate libraries are far fewer than they used to be, and usually those would be separate for good reason (e.g. Audiobooks, Music)

it’s a nice-to-have not a need-to-have but good to be able to set my expectations accordingly.

thanks!

Sorry to rehash this thread but a metadata question before I go in and jack things up on my side because I’m curious.

If I have set my own metadata (collections, moods, etc) for albums in Library 1, and I add the same files/folders to Library 2, will it import those same moods/collections as well? Since this is all about consolidating those for radio anyway…

I’m not exactly sure what you mean; the metadata will be imported, but that’s a separate thing from using things from multiple libraries in Mix Builder.

…asking about consolidating the libraries into fewer than i have now, thanks!

Ah, then I’m still a bit confused and I’m not sure how/where you set the moods up. Generally moods & styles are downloaded from our online metadata sources. If you’ve overridden them manually for an album, that will not affect other albums (even the same album added again).

While you are confused, don’t worry. I understand what you are saying and it is making enough sense I have the answer I need.

On another topic, thank you for adding browsing by Record Label to Plexamp, started playing with it last night and uncovered a bug with it (which I have posted to the forums!) but since you noted it’s your week off so, close this tab and enjoy some well deserved time off!
