According to my users Plex works great for video, but falls apart for music. I’ve been using plexamp successfully but I’d like my friend to be able to use it. I pay for Plexpass for myself but it’s hard to ask my users to pay for it as well when they don’t get any other perks.

Plexamp is, and as far as I’m aware will continue to be, a Plex Pass exclusive product. It’s developed by a small, passionate crew of Plex staff in their own personal time out of passion for music. In my opinion, Plex Pass is reasonably priced, even for end users (i.e. non-server admins), and paying for a Plex Pass supports Plexamp’s continued development.
With that said, any of your users that live in the same home as you can use Plexamp if they wish by setting up Plex Home.
