Plexamp 3 requires a plexpass per user!?

I don’t understand this decision to require each user to have a plex pass. I have a lifetime pass loaded onto my account and server and share my content with my family. I tried loading the new plexamp onto my dad’s phone, but he doesn’t have the pass and so can’t use it. If the content is streaming from my server, why can’t that content be shared to my users?

Is he a managed user or does he have his own account?
You know, Plex cannot give everything for free. Mobile apps are also not free, only for managed users if the server runs on a Plex pass user.

Edit: Plexamp is btw still a labs app, and access to lab is restricted to Plex pass users. Transparently stated on the labs page and probably also in whatever store you download the app.

I didn’t say it should be free. I’m saying it shouldn’t require a plex pass. the original plex android app for example can be activated with a one time fee of $5 to those without the plex pass.
No one outside of those who already have the plex pass will use plexamp now and I think that’s a shame because it’s really good. There are free alternatives out there… I don’t think people will spend the £100 entry point on a plex pass just to use plexamp (for users that don’t run the server).

You (or your dad) probably need to be patient and see what happens if and when it leave labs phase.

If you add your dad into your Plex Home, you can make it work.
But adding someone into your Plex Home should only be done if

  • the person has no Plex server of his/her own
  • is living with you in the same household (or at least in very close proximity)

I just ran into this same issue. My girlfriend is in my Plex Home and Plexamp signed into her account on her computer has no problem working but on the Android version it complains that she needs a Plex Pass.

Update plexamp to the latest version.
