Plexamp will not play a song, skip to next song and that one plays

Plexamp will not play a song (I get spinning icon). Skip to next song and it plays fine. There is not a problem with the song as I can play it from another location. This happens more frequently than I’d like.

In this case, Justin Timberlake - Take It From Here, would not play. I skipped to next song (Tom Petty - King Of The Hill) and it played fine. At home on my PC, I added Take It From Here to queue and it played fine.

Log files are attached.

Please provide plexamp logs from that incident.

Here are my Plexamp logs.

Looks like the issue is a combination of:

  1. You’re getting Opus streams remotely because of quality settings.
  2. There is a server issue converting the file.

The server error is below:

Jun 03, 2024 03:09:13.279 [139652667841336] ERROR - [Req#99476/Transcode/727db53d-21f6-4143-823f-cd1b01d9fa53-187777/bab23f10-4e1c-4e65-b208-808695789fb3] Error while opening decoder for input stream #0:0 : Function not implemented

Anything unique about the format of 04 Take It From Here.m4a that you can think of?

We’d take a sample of that file, as well.

Almost all of my library has been ripped using iTunes on a PC. I use Apple Lossless.

Interestingly, the next song (Tom Petty - King Of The Hill) was Opus also and it played just fine (screenshot attached).

I have zipped ‘04 Take It From Here.m4a’, but it is too large to attach (46.9MB). You can download it from here: [mod edit: removed file]

Thanks,
Mark

Only thing I can see is the file in question has a “video” stream as well:

  Stream #0:0[0x1](und): Audio: alac (alac / 0x63616C61), 44100 Hz, stereo, s16p, 999 kb/s (default)
      Metadata:
        creation_time : 2023-11-16T08:28:06.000000Z
        vendor_id : [0][0][0][0]
  Stream #0:1[0x0]: Video: mjpeg (Baseline), yuvj420p(pc, bt470bg/unknown/unknown), 600x600 [SAR 72:72 DAR 1:1], 90k tbr, 90k tbn (attached pic)

Worth checking to see if the one which does work has the same or not.

Here it is: [mod edit: removed download link]

That “video” stream is the album artwork. So guessing every one of my m4a files has it.

@MarkENordstrom Would you mind setting the TranscoderLogLevel preference to warning, restart your server, try to play the trouble file, then send us the logs? This is a hidden preference so you will need to follow: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201105343-advanced-hidden-server-settings/

I was able to recreate the error, Justin Timberlake - Take It From Here just showed the spinner and did not play. I set TranscoderLogLevel=“warning” in /volume1/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml.

Let me know if I can do anything else, I’m happy to help.

I found more songs that will not play Opus streams. Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound, songs 1 & 2 play fine. Songs 3-10 do not play (get the spinning icon).

Also, I re-ripped the Justin Timberlake album, uploaded to my server, did a ‘Scan Library Files’, and a refresh metadata on the album. The song Take It From Here will still not play when it is Opus.

After re-ripping the Jason Isbell album, songs 1-4 would play, but the rest would not.

I updated my Plex server to 1.40.3.8555. Justin Timberlake - Take It From Here plays as Opus 128 now.

Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound, songs 1-3 play fine. Songs 4-10 do not play (get the spinning icon).

I updated Plex server to Version 1.40.4.8679. Now all songs play fine as Opus 128 for the album Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound.

Thank you!
