Plexamp won't let wife sign-in : says plex pass is required

This is ridiculous; I purchased a Plex Pass so my (2-person) family can enjoy all of the premium plex functionality.

I told my wife to install Plexamp because the defualt plex app stops playing music suddenly on a regular basis. (Pixel 4, latest SW) Plexamp is dedicated to music and much more reliable in my experience.

Why can’t she use Plexamp - her account is definitely provisioned against my family, and a server with the Plex Pass functionality enabled.

If this is “by design” - then the design is contrary to the plex pass promise - and reflects the first time where Plex has legitimately let me down as a customer.

Sincerely,

I’m not sure what “Plex Pass promise” you’re referring to.
There’s certain features that apply to the server but most features are subject to a user having a Plex Pass membership.

If your wife has a separate Plex account, adding her to your Plex Home should give her access to some of those Plex Pass benefits (IIRC including the option to use Plexamp).

Keep in mind that apps don’t develop themselves and Plex have to earn money some way. Personally I very much prefer paying for that over Plex selling my data to pay for their expenses.

  1. add your wife to your Plex Home, if not already done so. This is the only way she can benefit from your Plex Pass.
  2. take your wife’s phone
  3. install Plexamp on it
  4. sign in using your own Plex account credentials (those which have the Plex Pass applied to it)
  5. In Plexamp, perform “Switch User” to your wife’s account

She is a part of my Plex home. I just confirmed accordingly and is being blocked from signing in…

I will try the steps that @OttoKerner just provided, but let’s be clear - it’s never a good idea to require users to sign-in with someone else’s credentials. This should “just work” so long as the user signing-in is a member of a Plex Home that has a Plex Pass.

Sincerely,
—Tom

We’ll check, I would have assumed that signing in with a “full” member of Plex Home would have worked.

I always use Plexamp this way.

I have an account with Plex Pass. The server is logged in with that account. I also use it for admin stuff & testing.

I have another Plex account that I use for watching & listening. It doesn’t have Plex Pass on its own. I invited that account to be a member of the main account’s Plex Home.

I don’t think @OttoKerner is suggesting you always have to do it that way, but it might knock something loose.

If you tried, did it help?

So just to clarify, you signed into Plexamp directly with the secondary account which (a) does not have a Plex Pass but (b) is part of a Plex Home and it worked?

Yes.

On Mac I just signed out and back in to confirm.
On iPhone I uninstalled and reinstalled to confirm.
I could test on Windows but I don’t guess that’s relevant.

@talph_hotmail.com - just to confirm, your wife has a regular Plex account, you have invited it to join your Home, she accepted, and it shows up here?:

Thanks for checking!

I have also been setup this way and can confirm it works. I have a Plexpass and I am logged in on my server, I created an account for my wife, I made that account part of my Plex home, I downloaded Plexamp to her phone, I logged her in using her account. I have also used my admin user account and then switched users to my wifes account. Both ways work. She has full access and use of Plexamp. Same goes for Plex.

I had trouble with my wife’s account. I first started using PlexAmp (longtime user of Plex) just a few weeks ago. I like what PlexAmp does. But it was not that intuitive for me, to setup for my wife’s own access.

Apparently, I didn’t have her account fully authorized. From a browser, I had to sign into my PlexPass and invite her to the account. Then I had to check her email to accept the invitation. From there, she was able to use her login on her android phone, rather than my PlexPass.

All happy now!
