This just happened tonight while watching a movie. It has never happened before, Plexconnect on my ATV3 has worked well for the past year.
I have attached my log file. The google DNS request just keeps happening, and the ATV will not access plex through the trailers app. It just says "Trailers Unavailable"
I’m not sure what would cause that. I have not touched my routers in a very long time. I will check them again when I get home tomorrow morning.
I have two routers connected through powerline network extenders. I get this same situation regardless of which router my CPU and atv are hooked up to.
Ok. I logged in remotely to my main cable router. This does have a port forward set up for port 53. I now remember I set that up some time ago fir my Xbox. Can’t remember why. I think it was to do with media sharing, might have been plex, or tversity. Can’t remember. Anyways it is set up to forward port 53. It’s been that way for a long time, don’t understand why this would start acting up all of a sudden.
Some "Hacker" has obviously just found it open and responding, so is using you to send their attack on Google.com (or what ever domain is being hit). Post 53 should NEVER be opened to the internet unless you know exactly what you are doing from a network security perspective as it can be easily used for this type of attack (especially with a DNS service behind it which is actually what plexconnect is).
That is one of the worst, but really any port that is not specifically needed for something your running is best not to have open. Plexconnect needs nothing open from the internet. PMS needs 32400 for plex.tv connection and remote access.
Thanks for your help freebie… Sorry for the many posts, but I’m kinda freaked out… Anyways got to the bottom of it.
Now I remember why I had those port forward rules set up. See attached pic from Xbox live … I was having problems with my xbox communicating with my computer. So I did what the picture wanted me to do.
Now that I’ve deletef those port forward rules, is my Xbox going to be screwed up?
I dont know why the Xbox would need port 53 open, but even if it did the port should be forwarded to the IP of the Xbox, not to your PC, so Based on this I would not expect you to have any issues with the Xbox.
