PlexConnect - NAS/AppleTV

Hello!

I want to use my AppleTV 3 with Plex on a Synology NAS (DS214play). Is it possible to watch .mkv files in 1080p and DTS/DolbyDigital? Or could it be they will be transcoded and sent just in SD and not in DTS/DolbyDigital?

Thanks in Advance!

Hallo!

Yes, but only if the video codec is H.264 and the bitrate does not exceeds 20Mbps. Regarding audio, the ATV3 supports DD 5.1 in "pass-through" mode, so it's up to your TV (or A/V Amplifier) to decode the audio signal.

Thanks for highlighting this point. However PlexConnect can render external subtitles in .srt format, thus avoiding transcoding, so if one takes the necessary precautions subtitles will not be a problem for the ds214play.

Thanks again! Probably I will buy a Mac Mini to run Plex on it (and a other stuff) instead of a new NAS (because I already have a Synology NAS, but a DS213j where Plex is not running). It make more sense to me because I already use other Apple products (iPhone, Macbook Air, Apple TV) and there is just a price difference of €100.

What do you think? Good "solution"?

Just installed a DS415+ and i'm really really happy with it (coming from Readynas Pro 6 (E7600 CPU) and/or iMac with (i5 CPU)).

But i have to admit, that i convert all my media to m4v. IMHO it gives the best compatibility over all. No hassle with transcoding and no probs at all with subs... (ok, not for Xbox one - since Xbox one will force to transcode everything with subs).

Absolutely right solution!

I am also got a Mac mini and now everything works perfectly. Transcoding use just a few proccesor resources (around 10-20%).

You can keep you libriarys on Synology and install OpenPlex on Mac.

Enjoy.

You can keep you libriarys on Synology and install OpenPlex on Mac.

Or install PlexConnect in the Syno (with bwynants installer) and wake-on-lan the Mac when required.
