PMS 1.18.6.2368 broke VOBSUB

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2368 (Windows 10 Pro)
Player Version#: 7.28.0.15501 (ba34f115) (Android)

Last night I updated the PMS on my server, and all of a sudden, all my DVD rips had problems playing with subtitles turned on. I have about 1000 films ripped from DVD in the same fashion, (pretty much) all have VOBSUB subtitles.

I watched Zatoichi about 24 hours before I updated the server, and everything was working perfectly. When I tried it last night, I got this error on my Android client:

“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app.”

Totally ridiculous general error that tells me exactly zero, of course, so I checked the logs, and this is the only line that seems to be related to this session (that says anything is wrong):

“Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 7274496 bytes: 10054 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host”

Which doesn’t tell me anything, really.

So, I tried messing with subtitle setting in my client. Tried setting “burn subtitles” under “advanced” to “only image formats” instead of “automatic”, et voila – it works again.

So, what is actually going on here?

First of all, I could swear VOBSUB subtitled films were never transcoded in the past, but I’m not positive. If transcoding wasn’t needed in the past, why do I suddenly need to transcode now?

If I actually transcoded every film using VOBSUB in the past, why has the automatic burn-in setting suddenly stopped working in my Android client?

I double checked, and my GF using iOS had no issues with the automatic setting (the transcode starts without the error.)
