Hello! I’m running into an issue where transcoding fails anytime I play back a media file with VOBSUB subtitles. Plex gives me an error like this:
Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.
This happens when I try playback using Plex Web on macOS, Windows, and also the Plex app on iOS. Oh, and also on Shield TV Pro. The server shows errors like this: [Req#23b50ed/Transcode/dg9wvxhetocdzn9808hraanw/c8d6dec5-cb7d-41cd-984a-23112867d2aa] [vobsub @ 0x7fe29e10bd00] Unable to open /home/media/plextmp/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-dg9wvxhetocdzn9808hraanw-c8d6dec5-cb7d-41cd-984a-23112867d2aa/temp-0.sub as MPEG subtitles [Req#23b50f0/Transcode/dg9wvxhetocdzn9808hraanw/c8d6dec5-cb7d-41cd-984a-23112867d2aa] /home/media/plextmp/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-dg9wvxhetocdzn9808hraanw-c8d6dec5-cb7d-41cd-984a-23112867d2aa/temp-0.idx: No such file or directory
The files play back fine when I disable subtitles, or switch to SRT so it’s really just VOBSUB that trips it up. Server is Ubuntu 22.04 with an i5-7600K with hardware transcoding enabled, playback/transcoding happens fine in all other circumstances.
On my server, I run the plexmediaserver service as user media, and my transcoding temp directory is /home/media/plextmp. Both the media and plex users have full read/write here. The volume is a 500GB NVMe drive that’s only 1% full.
I made a post over on Reddit about it and someone suggested I stop PMS, clear the codecs directory (/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Codecs in my case), and restart PMS to allow new downloads of the latest codecs. However, my folder was empty and even after stopping/starting, it’s still empty. I was directed here to ask, so here I am.
This is not a huge issue since playback happens just fine when I don’t enable VOBSUB subtitles, but I’m real curious if this can be fixed and now I’m far enough down the rabbit hole. Should I be concerned that there’s no codecs installed, is there a way to force them in there or do I need them? Thanks!
