PMS Agent / Metadata / Scanner Help? Nothing downloads.

OS: Windows Server 2016 Essentials
PMS Version: 1.3.3.3148 ( 2.12.5 )
Issue: Plex Media Server will not download / display any metadata or artwork. The only metadata matched is the name and a random screenshot of the movie or show.
ISP: AT&T U-Verse
Router: Pace 5268AC

What I Have Tried:
-Clean install of Plex Media Server (cleaned Registry and deleted PMS AppData folder), twice.
-Deleted all existing libraries.
-Tested functionality on a Windows 2016 virtual server (Windows 10 host), which worked 100%.
-Added Plex.TV, TheTVDv, TheMovieDB to IE trusted sites.

The log files attached are after a clean and fresh install of PMS. One library added for TV Shows. Log files are attached. The parts that stand out to me are below:

2017-01-24 18:28:20,993 (2320) : ERROR (networking:219) - Error opening URL ‘https://tvdb2.plex.tv/search/series?name=Arrow+S01+Season+1+Complete
2017-01-24 18:28:20,993 (2320) : INFO (logkit:16) - HTTPError 404:

I’ve been troubleshooting this a for a couple of weeks now and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve been running Plex for a few years and I’ve never had an issue like this.

You are not following the naming guide. So most likely your shows are not getting matched. If PMS can’t match your shows, it’s not going to download the metadata. You’re filenames are ok, but your folder names are not right.

H:\Videos\TV\Seinfeld.Complete.Series-720p.WEBrip.AAC.EN-SUB.x264-[MULVAcoded]\Season 4\Seinfeld.S04E13.The.Pick.720p.WEBrip.AAC.EN-SUB.x264-[MULVAcoded].mkv

Should be

H:\Videos\TV\Seinfeld\Season 4\Seinfeld.S04E13.The.Pick.720p.WEBrip.AAC.EN-SUB.x264-[MULVAcoded].mkv

The way you have it, PMS will try to match the show to Seinfeld.Complete.Series-720p.WEBrip.AAC.EN-SUB.x264-[MULVAcoded], which may or may not produce the result you expect.

I wish it were as simple as that, but I went ahead and cleaned up for folder structure and it did not correct the issue. I have used Plex for 3 years with the existing folder structure with no issues. All of the TV show’s I currently have previously were matched and displayed all information (I started troubleshooting this because my new movies weren’t pulling any meta data / artwork).I can’t even manually match. Fact is, both my Movies & TV Show libraries aren’t doing anything but showing the title, some times I’ll get the poster art for the entire series — but never for the season, never the episodes names, never the description, nothing. This all started with the most recent update and I see others experiencing similar issues with this update. I’ve blown away all of my libraries to “start fresh” and it still doesn’t work. Updated logs attached…

Here are the logs from the Sever 2016 Essentials VM (running on Windows 10 host). This virtual Plex Media Server works just fine.

Your logs look fine. I see it downloading posters, artwork, chapter info, trailers and extras. At the time you grabbed the log, PMS was still working on gathering the info. The movie 300 should be done. Can you check that there is no data for this movie? Your logs say otherwise.

Hi,

I don’t have a solution I’m afraid, but I at least wanted to let you know that you’re not alone with this. I experience the exact same issue and the logs show very little. I’ve seen other complain of the same thing when using the 1.3.* releases and some users have resolved by rolling back to 1.2.7 or earlier…that hasn’t worked for me.

The first response I always see is “It’s your naming convention…blah blah blah” when it clearly isn’t.

I moved my entire library over to a new dedicated server and then experienced this issue, whereas the exact same files (with naming conventions) worked flawlessly previously.

Any new title I add struggles to add the meta data and poster. Sometimes it resolves itself in a few days, however other times I have to manually fix them (although not guaranteed to work) by:

  • Going into the movie in Plex
  • Click Unmatch
  • Edit the year from 2017 to the movies actual year (when you unmatch, Plex seems to default to today’s date)
  • Click Match
  • Select movie from list
  • Wait

Hopefully this will be addressed in an update.

I removed and re-added the Movies section again last night. Here are the log files from this afternoon and 2 screen shots of what I end up with. Plex clearly matches the movie, but only pulls the title and screenshot.

I also attached log files from the test Virtual Machine which pulls everything in just fine (The log for this begins with “VM”).

There are some odd things going on the log making it hard to read. Can you try again with a new library and just 1 movie?

New logs attached. New libray with one Movie added, Central Intelligence.

I’m suddenly having a very similar issue. Literally out of the blue with no changes to the plex server, anything I add is no longer pulling metadata. My problem is primarily with TV shows. I’ve been running plex for years. I’ve always used the exact same file naming structure I’m using now (TV\ShowName\ShowName.s0Ne0N.mkv). But a week or maybe two ago, metadata simply stopped populating. Oddly, on many of the shows, I do see the Director and/or Writers, but descriptions, titles of episodes are just not there. I can see Plex scanning these when I add them, I can see it "loading metadata for showX’. Once it completes it’s little scan/load metadata operation, the Episode title shows up as ‘Episode X’, the description is blank, but (in many cases, NOT all) the director and writer metadata is present. So frustrating and makes PLex feel so much less useful. At this point I’ve tried everything I can think of and nothing has worked and it’s getting depressing to try to use Plex as it tells me less about what I’m browsing through than my cable box :frowning: Can anyone help with these problems? If my problem is different, I apologize, just seems to me like these problems are the same or at least very closely related.

I don’t understand what’s going on here at all. Check this out. These 2 servers should have identical logs (Plex Media Scanner.log), but they don’t…

First - on your earlier log for Central Intelligence. I see you started the scan around 17:04. You then got the logs at 17:09. According to your logs, the scanner wasn’t done. It was still trying to download posters. It is going really slow for some reason and I can’t tell why. I just know it wasn’t done.

Second - for this other attempt. There is another scanner log approximately 1 minute earlier where it scanned the file. So in the log you posted above, that is correct, since it already had the movie in there from before. And just like for Central Intelligence, it was still downloading posters (slowly) when you grabbed the file.

In comparison, the VM is downloading the posters at a normal rate. I don’t know what is causing the slowness but I would check what other programs you have installed. Do you have any type of anti-virus, internet security, malware scanning going on. I’m not familiar with Windows Server, but there may be something built-in that is causing the slowness. I’ve seen other setups using Server 2012 so it should be working.

This is a pretty bare install. No AV — just Plex Media Server, 7-Zip, Adobe Reader DC, TeamViewer & “media obtaining software”

The sequence for Plex is
1- identify files to include
2 - try to identify movie
3 - load into db and show in Web (this is where you see generic posters)
4 - get text data from agent
5 - download posters from agent
6 - update DB and reload Web (posters change to final one and text is loaded)

Your logs stop in the middle of 5 so I can’t tell if it ever gets to 6, which could be why you don’t see the data, but your logs say otherwise (step 4 completed).

I looked back at your logs and when you did your earlier test for Cloverfield, the logs are still in the newer package and they also just stop, so they did not get to step 6. I do see some sort of timeout error in your PMS logs that match up to the time the agent stopped gathering data.

Can you try this again, but first restart PMS.

I ended up just doing a clean install of Server 2016 Essentials and re-installing PMS. So far all is well. All metadata and artwork is downloading. Hate that I had to do it this way. Planning to make a full back up image of the OS partition in case it happens again, that way I can just revert to a point when it was working.
