PMS bug: something went wrong in photo library

Ooh come on Plex !!! New update, and still the photo bug isn’t fixed? One of your core components is still completely broken !!! It worked in the passed !!!

Please everyone be patient - I think this is a quirky bug and might be a bit tough to nail. Being grumpy isn’t going to coerce anyone to work on it faster… Being an engineer myself, some things can be quite difficult. It is a nasty one though! Affects me every time I use Plex for Windows.

I bet it’s on the cusp of being fixed. I am running Plex for Windows 1.104.0.241-2164c90a, and Plex Server 1.41.2.9200.

It happens consistently, and I always have to do the following:

  • After the error “Something went wrong. Unexpected error occured” - we all know things are pretty much frozen up.
  • So I click on settings (the wrench), then back on home (house icon)
  • I then navigate back to the folder I was trying to get to.
  • It seems to always work the second time.
  • But if I’m doing a lot of browsing, trying to find a picture, this is purely painful. Fortunately I have one computer that I also keep a copy of all the pictures on the local drive too, so I can go there and browse them.

One workaround I saw on reddit seems to help - Click on the “slideshow” (play icon in the middle), then while slideshow going, go to the navigation bar at bottom and click the “Show photo strip” icon. You can at least see the photos. But even after that if I click stop to go out of the slideshow and click on the album I still get the error. Yikes…

Plex - do you need another video/debug log of the error? I can reproduce it handily! Just say the word!

Still nothing?

This is getting ridiculous. Again a new update from the plex server. But this bug is still in it !!!

I said it months ago, plex is dead, if you read this thread and haven’t bought plex yet, don’t waste your money, go in another direction.

You were wrong then, and you’re wrong now.

Some bugs are harder to fix than others.

Signed, a programmer of 30 years.

That is true, but has Plex found the problem already? Is the Plex team able to reproduce this issue?
We get zero updates about this.

For me, the complete photo part of plex is not usable anymore because I have everything in subfolders. The reading of the subfolders is the problem.

The funny thing is, in Plex Web or Plex for Windows it does not work, but if I open my Plex in Plex HTPC, then it works perfectly fine. I think it’s a client problem and not a server problem. Have you noticed this too?

Well, I bought Plex a long time ago. And I like Plex,. And I hope it’s not dead. But this… this bug is taking ages to be fixed.
Is there some registration or following system on Plex were bugs are registered and followed?
Except in this thread, I can’t find any mentioning of this bug noticed by Plex.

I thought this issue had been fixed - seems that it’s either regressed or was never totally fixed. Specifically, I no longer get the iOS app crashes when drilling down through folders of photos, but I’m still getting “Something went wrong An unexpected error occurred.” error in the web app. In both cases I’m seeing the following errors in the logs:

[Req#2290] [Time] Failed to convert ‘1900-02-01 00:00:01’ to epoch.
[Req#2290] [Time] Failed to convert ‘-2’ from epoch.

Seems like the mobile app can handle this, but the web app can’t.

I have to join to this club. I’ve noticed the problem after I’ve merged mine old videos from old Panasonic handycam into photo library as it is more convenient to browse all family stuff in a single library.

As a result I saw the following

Folders=years where videos were uploaded are “broken” now. And “Something went wrong” is in every folder now.

The only relevant error message in debug I could find is:

Wow, still an issue, I thought It may have been a bad database, I spent a day deleting my installation, new install, reindex everything, same error. With a dozen sets of logs, videos, etc I can not believe the engineering team can not repro this and fix it. Even do a code compare from the previous working versions and isolate the issue when it was introduced.

Dear friend, as @elan Elan would say you are wrong, Plex is not dead, he just dedicated himself to something other than plex
I switched to immich, if I had known it didn’t work I would never have bought a lifetime plex pass…

I just looked at immich, looks like a great upgrade, Im going to give it a try, thanks for the suggestion !!!

I’ve been running a previous stable version because of this photo library issue. Has anyone tried a current version to see if the problem has been resolved?

Running latest version. Still not fixed.

Plex can’t try much harder to lose long-term customers.

With the new version from a few days ago, I see a small improvement. When I enter a folder and see the “Something went wrong” notification, refreshing the page loads it correctly. A few versions ago, I was redirected to the home page.

You are right. There is a minor improvement. The whole thing doesn’t lock up any more. The “Something went wrong” notification still pops up very often through.
