PMS Continually scans library and never stops unless re-boot

Hi

I hope someone can help with this NEW issue.

If I start a library scan of a single library, Plex will continuously scan the same library and never stop. (This is evident by the spinning circle for that library never stopping)

If I add new media to that library while in this mode, the new media is never picked up.

I am now forced to reboot the server after every library scan and manually start a scan in order to get new media into the PMS Data base.

Any thoughts on this issue?

Thanks for the help…

Cheers
John

Can you provide the scanner log file when it is stuck in this look? Probably best to zip all the scanner logs together.

Thanks for the reply.

Here are my scanner logs.

John

Your scanner logs only show PMs scanning a few movies then stopping. So it appears the scanner is working ok. Can you now provide the PMS log? I’d like to see if something is repeatedly triggering the scanner.

Here ya Go

Thanks for the help

John

PS: I had a thought. Could there be a bug in the scanner that when it finds a corrupt video file it just hangs forever??

What do you think??

It’s possible, but I don’t see that happening in your log.

When your server is not busy, can you restart PMS and just let it sit there for 3 minutes, then provide me this new log. I’d like to see what PMS is doing during startup.

Your log file has the line:

Library Updater: Requested that section 32 be updated, force=0, deep=0, subdir=Y:\Movies\W iTunes=0

It appears that line is logged with those arguments only in response to an update requested due to a file system change. So, you have the preference Update my library automatically on and something on your computer is changing the file system within that directory (there are a few directories in your log). Plex is detecting this change and initiating a scan to catch the changes.

Hi
Thanks you guys for your help on this issue.

When the scanner is continually running I am unable to restart the PMS after stopping it.
I have to re-boot the computer.

So… I restarted the computer and waited for a few minutes as suggested.
I have attached both Server’s and Scanner’s log.

During that time the scanner was not scanning.

If I ad a file or start the scanner, that is when the scanner will start and never stop. I have even let it run over night just to find it scanning in the morning.

Go figure.

Again… Thanks for your help

John

Hi

Problem solved.!!

There IS a situation where the scanner will hang and continue to run forever…

Thanks for all your help.

Cheers,
John

Can you explain what that situation was and how you avoided it? It might help someone else.

Sure
This is what I did…
I took a very uninformed look at the scanner logs.
I did not understand much of what was in the log.

I did notice it would read a file then do a couple of things then move on to the next file.

However, after reaching one file the log contained many, many lines of processing and seemingly not moving on to the next file.

Soooo… I removed the file that the scanner seemed to be hung up on, re-booted the box, and restared the server.
The problem went away.

Not very scientific but solved the problem. lol…

Hope that helps someone else!!!

Cheers

If u still have that file, I would love to get a copy to see if I can reproduce and see if this situation can be avoided.

Sure
That was the first scanner log I sent you.

You will find, I Think, the scanner goes crazy after trying “The Money Pit”

Least that’s how it looks to me. I removed “The Money Pit” and the problem went away

John

I meant the actual video file. If you can make a short sample file and see if it causes the same issue then provide me a link to that file. I would like to look why the file is causing the issue.

Hi

I don’t have “The Money Pit” anymore.

Found another file doing the same thing… “Holiday Inn”

How would you like me to send you the video file??
It’s over 8gig

John

PS
Sent you a PM with file access…
