PMS crashing continually since installing 1.32.8.7639

Server Version#:1.32.8.7639-7000
Player Version#:Various

Since I installed the latest beta PMS on my Synology NAS on 3rd November, it keeps crashing. Up to then it ran very stably with all beta versions I installed. I have not spotted any reports in this forum of similar instability with this PMS version, so I wonder if something else is going on with my installation.

I can’t roll back to an earlier version, so I tried re-installing 1.32.8.7639 on top of the current instance, but the same crashing issues continue.

I am unable to ascertain what action is triggering the crashes - sometimes it’s when I am interacting with the server via a player (Windows, web, Android app all affect it), sometimes it happens ‘spontaneously’. I need to re-start the application each time from the Package Center in the Synology DSM.

As I have not reported such matters before to this forum, can I provide some logs to help the experts among you figure out what’s going on? Which logs do you need to see?

Thanks in anticipation, Paul

Make sure Plex Media Server is configured for debug, not verbose level logs.
Settings → Server_Name → General + Show Advanced

After the next crash:

  1. Restart Plex Media Server
  2. Wait 2 minutes for Plex to fully start & log the startup sequence
  3. Pull server log files (settings → troubleshooting)
  4. Upload the zip file to the thread (drag into window, it will insert at cursor location).

Please do not downgrade before providing log files.

Synology does not permit direct downgrades.

To roll back to an earlier version:

  1. Uninstall Plex Media Server.
When prompted, choose the “Uninstall Only” (first) option.
  2. Install the desired version.
  3. Login to Plex using the IP address of the NAS (ex: http://10.1.2.3:32400/web).
  4. If you see a “503 Maintenance” message in Plex Web, wait a few minutes then refresh the browser window. That is Plex adjusting the database schema to the new version.

Hi @FordGuy61, thanks for the guidance.
The PMS crashed overnight. As I had already turned debug logging on, after I restarted PMS a few minutes ago I downloaded the attached set of log files.
Hopefully you or another PMS guru will be able to give me some pointers.
I will not attempt to downgrade yet, in case the problem is obvious.
Thanks, Paul

Thanks for the log files.

It looks like something is happening with Live TV & DVR.

I do not use that part of Plex, so will be of little assistance with troubleshooting.

I added the livetv-dvr tag to the thread. Hopefully someone active in that section of the forum can assist.

There are other errors, but this is the sequence that repeats hundreds of times, including just before Plex Media Server crashed.

Thanks for your initial assessment. I use the LiveTV and DVR functions extensively, recording several TV (and radio) programmes and films via DVB-T every day. As far as I am aware nothing has recently changed in my set-up or configuration. Perhaps some modules in PMS relating to the LiveTV or DVR functionality were updated in the last beta release?

There were several DVR fixes in 1.32.6.

The release notes for 1.32.8.7639 list one change for LiveTV:

  • (LiveTV) Transcoded video would fail to play in some circumstances (#14539)

Go ahead and fall back to a prior release if you want. That would help determine if the problem is only with the current beta release.

The current public release is 1.32.7.7621 and is available at plex.tv.

To fall back, you’ll first have to uninstall 1.32.8, then install the desired version.

When uninstalling, you’ll see an “Are you sure” screen, then a screen with three options. Choose “Uninstall Only.” This keeps everything in the Plex Data Folder intact (database, etc.)…

One the uninstall is finished, install the desired version.

I have downgraded my PMS installation to 1.32.7.7621, and currently it’s running OK. I’ll keep an eye on it over the next hours and report back if I get any crashes.

Good news - no crash in past 30 hours, so I guess there’s some issue in 1.32.8.7639.
I’ll try the next beta version when it’s released to see if the problem reoccurs.

Having the same issues with crashing on this version.

Hi @DaveSewhuk, seems you’re running the same version on almost the same Synology platform. At least this suggests there’s probably not something ‘broken’ with my installation.
As I mentioned earlier, I downgraded my PMS to the last public version (1.32.7.7621) and it’s been stable for a week. I suggest you try that. I followed @FordGuy61’s instructions and it worked a treat and I didn’t lose any settings or data.

I’ve been having the same problem with my Plex server running the dvr. It crashes about once per day.

Same here. Once I installed 1.32.8, and getting daily crashes. I use my Synology Plex very heavily for both DVR and music. I went back and looked at my logs, and what I saw was not much different from what you guys are seeing. I did notice that every time I manually restarted the Plex service that the crash logs are getting uploaded to Plex. What I saw in my logs was processing metadata from my recordings, then the server tried to contact a plex URL, repeatedly failing. The actual cause of crash though was never directly indicated in the logs. I did a database optimization via the settings, but it has not resolved this issue. Really getting frustrated about these daily crashes, so I did some googling on this version. If they have not released an update by the time I get home, I too will rollback to the previous stable version. My crash log for this specific version is getting large in file size. Here is the most recent snippit, eliminating the debug lines…

I have several of these warning lines before the errors:
Feb 11, 2024 12:01:47.247 [140319382080312] WARN - [Req#2453e6] Missing X-Plex-Container-Size header. This will fail with status code 400 in the future.

Then I get these right before the crash (note the metadata ID changes each time). I am pasting two sequences, but there are several of these, an no indication at the end of the log as to why the service actually crashes. Obviously there is something wrong with the ‘containers’ and the related URLs - this issue did not exist in the previous version. I have zero PMS Crash Reports in the previously installed version of 1.32.7.7621.

Well, there is not a new production version available (at least via the plex app) & noticing the releases have slowed down recently. There is a new beta version available in the 1.40 branch, but I am opting not to install that version with this last release going so poorly. Going to the downloads section on Plex, the previous version of 1.32.7 was no longer available on their downloads page, they are only showing the 1.32.8 release as the latest ‘stable’ version. Fortunately I still had the 1.32.7 version in my downloads. Now hopefully back to a stable server.

Will report back in a couple days to confirm if my plex server has stabilized. (I suspect it will because it was good for me before).

My now-current Plex server:
1.32.7.7621-7000 running on a Synology DS920+ with firmware DSM 7.2.1-69057 update 4.

We’ll see. Hopefully the plex devs fix this issue in a future release.

P.S. - I have loved the Plex product for years (still do), but this recent update was un-characteristic in the stability department.

Special thanks for @FordGuy61 for the rollback direction, and @bluerock27 for confirming the feedback post-downgrade. I will supply my feedback as well.

Hi @CrazyDog77 and others,
I bit the bullet a few days ago and installed 1.40.0.7997 (beta), fully expecting it to crash and to need to downgrade again. Pleasingly, the server is still up and appears to be working correctly.
I’ll report back if things change…

Good to hear. As an update on my side, Plex has been stable since downgrading. Looking forward to hearing your beta experience.

I’ve been getting these crashes recently as well… Curious if just disabling all the Live TV/DVR stuff generally resolves this, as I hardly use that feature anymore…

@bluerock27 - How’s stability? I pulled up the full app today and noticed that 1.40.0.7998 is now a production release, but no notes specifically addressing our common crash. I personally have been stable since downgrading. I’ve never doubted Plex, but after this last release, I’m going to be a little cautious. If anyone else has feedback regarding the 1.40.0.7997 or 1.40.0.7998 release, I’d love to hear it.
