PMS on Windows 10 keeps crashing after v1.18.1.1973 update

I had success disabling my Intel Integrated GPU as well. I’m running v. 1.18.2.241(beta) on Win 10 with Nvidia K620.

@Rontie @androvsky @drslevy

To help identify the cause of the crashes that came in between versions 1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b
and 1.18.1.1966-10fc2f8d3 , I am producing server development builds to be tried out. I will send you links by Private Message.

If you have disabled the graphics card, please re-enable and confirm the crashes are still occurring and then install the versions I will send you. Note that if the version number is lower than what is installed, you would need to do an uninstall first through Add or Remove programs

I am making the builds available to users that I have seen evidence from and I confirmed the issue

@sa2000, Do we know what version of intel graphics driver they have installed? i’m just trying to rule that out.

I am treating these as different as we are not crashing in the intel driver code - whereas for all the others ones - we were crashing in same area and following a similar path until crashing in the igdumdim32.dll module

Thanks, sorry I haven’t been responding, been a bit busy. I’ll try to run tests tonight.

Please let us know if this private build works etc. My issues also started with build 1966 and I created a post with logs a little while back - Plex Version 1.18.1.1966 keeps crashing

It works fine when I reverted back to 1944.

Similar issues here, but in my case my server would immediately crash if I tried to play anything encoded with HEVC. x264 encoded shows would stream normally. I disabled HW Encoding last night and was able to stream HEVC again.

This was the final log entries before the crash:

Nov 20, 2019 17:56:28.378 [19648] ERROR - ClientProfileExtra: video transcode target already exists for streaming hls
Nov 20, 2019 17:56:28.890 [19648] ERROR - [FFMPEG] - Error initializing an MFX session: -3.

please repeat with DEBUG logging enabled on the server and attach the logs zip

server settings / general / show advanced

You should also be aware that there is an intel driver issue as well - identified in this forum thread

I am using PMS 1.18.2.2058

The crashes with HWA enabled is one a remembered from maybe a year ago or so?

Same error as above: ERROR - [FFMPEG] - Error setting child device handle: -xxx

Apparently its back again, but disabling the integrated GPU fixes this for me as well.

Very much appreciated.

I finally updating to 1.18.2.2058, after refusing to update since 1.18.1.1973 caused crashes. I can confirm that 1.18.2.2058 continues to have the crashing issue. I can also confirm that disabling “Use HW acceleration when available” fixes they issue. I can also confirm that disabling integrated GPU, and enabling “Use HW acceleration when available” also works. Its upsetting we are still having this issue after several updates.

So is it that Intel GPU is issue but Nvidia is not an issue?

yes. I’ve also got all of this in 1.18.2.2058. I’m sure I had already upgraded recently and the problem seemed to have gone away but it’s back in 1.18.2.2058
Plex seems to be becoming more and more unreliable over the last 6 months

Same issue here with latest PMS Version after starting a stream with hw encoding.
Also a reinstall of the intel and nvidia driver doesnt fix the problem.

but hey f-cking tidal and music integration works well that no one gives a sh-t about! Guess dev’s don’t give a sh-t about Plex’s primary functions anymore…

Update on current position with regards to crashes when hardware transcoding

  • There is a bug that came in after version 1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b between this release and 1.18.1.1966-10fc2f8d3. As mentioned in my earlier post here and in other threads, I am working with a number of users to identify the change that brought the problem. These crashes have only been seen on windows and they occur after heap corruptions - which makes it difficult to get good dumps.

  • There is an intel driver bug that leads to crashes when hardware transcoding. This has now been tracked to specific versions of the intel driver - and is detailed in this post

  • It is not clear yet, if an old problem (from 2018) of crashes has been addressed by recent updates to the transcoder and ffmpeg - these arose when running Plex Media Server as a Service or through Scheduled Task or headless through RDP session. So should avoid doing that whilst we are still trying to establish what the current crashes are

Same issue here: Hardware transcoding (QuickSync) causing server crash

Hi all,

i checked different szenarios now.
The problem is the intel video driver when using Intel HD 530 with switchable graphics (GTX1060).
Intel UHD 630 is without any problems.

Seeing all the issues people are having around the forums on more recent versions with the transcoder specifically, myself included, it seems to me that maybe in trying to fix the old problem by updating the transcoder, the new problems were created in the process?

There have been many changes that extend the use of hardware transcoding. With the help of a number of users testing out a number of development builds, we are close to identifying the new bug

Any updates here?
