Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: 5 different friends all have the same issue, version on my player is 8.3.1.19108Plex Media Server.5.log (3.8 MB)
I have a PMS on my home network and my friends only can access it at 720P 2MBPS due to it being an indirect connection. Also, I have access to three friends PMS and I also (as a remote viewer this time) can only watch media at 720p 2MBPS, so this seems to be a very common issue. My log is attached. No hardware has changed in years and I’m not sure why this issue has started lately. I have a gigabit internet connection and the PMS is on a windows 10 PC running a ryzen 9 3900x.
Can you explain how to use that website to test if the port forwarding is working? Can I change the IP address or is that just the IP address of the device (like my phone) that I’m using to go to the port forwarding test website you gave me above?
You want to have the same public IP address as your Plex server.
Is your Plex server on your home network? If so, then go to canyouseeme.org from a system on your home network, and put in your remote access port (ex: 32400) in place of the default (80). It doesn’t matter if you use a phone, tablet, PC, etc.
Ok, tested it and the port didn’t appear available and the connection timed out. I then deleted the port forwarding for 32400 and created a new one after logging into my router using 32500, which was unused on my network and that also didn’t work and shows up as unavailable. What could be causing my inability to have forwarded ports work?
There are multiple reasons why port forwarding may not work.
Can you post a screenshot of your port forwarding setup?
Can you confirm you are not assigned a cgnat ip from your ISP?
Can you confirm you are not double natting on your network?
my port forwarding page in my Verizon router has 4 columns. First lists the internal static IP address of the computer, in this case this is the IP address of the computer that acts as the PMS, second column states the port that is forwarded which was 32400, third column says WAN Connection Type which says all broadband devices, and the fourth is for status which says active. After adding the port forwarding i would save settings and then restart the router an the computer that has PMS on it.
How can i confirm if i have a cgnat IP from my isp?
confirmed, there is only one router on the network (although i do have a passive network switch attached but that has always been there and it worked in the past)
I see a public IP in plex in the remote access page (156.146) is that what you are looking for? In the router i see 108.6, is that what you are looking for?
If you go to canyouseeme.org from a device inside it shows as 156.146.x.x and your router shows a public IP of 108.6.x.x?
If that is the case Verizon is doing something fishy and you should contact them and ask for a static IP or public IP. Some carriers charge an extra monthly fee for this.
When I do it from a device on my network it shows 108.6, but plex shows 156.146 in the remote access tab, would that be a plex issue? The below is copied with some numbers removed for privacy from the plex remote access tab
Actually, i just checked two devices on my network and the ip address for a wired connection (where the PMS server is) shows up at 156.146 and wireless when using my phone shows 108.6, is that odd? I’m using a vpn on my plex computer and no vpn on my cell phone.
I would disable VPN, restart PLEX and check canyouseeme.org and see if it shows success.
Ill take a look at the logs and see if I can find anything related.
ok, so restarted plex after turning off vpn and the public ip now matches what is shown in plex and also on can you see me, both show 108.6 as the public ip. Below is from the remote access tab of PMS. Should port forwarding be turned on for both 32400 and 33333 or just one of them? Also, i assume the ip address should match the port as shown below when i forward the port in my router settings yes? To be clear, please confirm which ip address and which port should i forward in the router.
You should only need port 32400 not 33333 unless you specify a different port on the remote access page but I just use the default 32400 and would recommend you do the same.
As far as the router port forwarding you should only need to specify the 192.168.x.x IP which should be your Plex server IP.
If you want to run a VPN all the time, you best option is to use a VPN service that offers split tunneling by application.
I use PIA and add all PLEX apps on server as application exceptions and a non default Browser. In my case Chrome with a Home page and bookmark. This way you open Plex server via Browser directly, without using the Plex Chevon. Works perfectly. This idea has expanded to add Bookmarks to sites that are Geo Restricted to my home country.
