PMS Restart/Reboot with Password Reset Please

I travel and need to remotely change my admin password if I forget to delete my account from remote viewing devices. After remotely changing my admin password, I can’t access my server without a local server reboot or PMS server restart to “reclaim it”. This reboot/restart needs to be made possible if you rest your password while traveling and need to view personal content and OTA TV. Without it you are locked out from your PMS.

I think you can claim a Windows based Plex server using a Remote Desktop session. The PMS Installation documentation mentions it (bottom of linked doc), but TBH, I’ve never tried it.

Alternative: Create another Plex account tied to a separate e-mail address (use a free e-mail service such as Google, Yahoo, etc).

Use that account to stream while traveling.

You can change the password as needed, without impacting your Plex server.

You can add the account to your Plex Home if needed for Plex Pass privileges.

Alternative: Travel with a Roku/Amazon/etc streaming stick. Avoids the need to login to your Plex account on devices you do not own.

Thanks for the quick thoughts on possible work around ideas.

  1. Would prefer to not use other tools (even built in MS ones) that are infrequently or not typically used, opening additional security risks that are nearly impossible to detect and isolate. PSM admins are frequently/mostly not MS/Linux server administrators.
  2. The suggested use of a non-admin user account remotely would eliminate my ability to use Tidal remotely (phone/TV/PC).
  3. The non-restart/reboot behavior also stops the use of Tidal via Plexamp. It eliminates the ability to play all music everywhere which I love about PLEX (phone/TV/PC).

A simple automatic PMS restart and logon when the new password is accepted and changed on the PMS would guarantee not getting travel days/weeks/months away from a local restart or PC reboot and other complicating situations/challenges such as Win PCs can reboot and restart PMS with Updates, can’t readily restart the OS and PMS with a GRID power loss. KISS, keep it simple ******.
