PLEX Server password reset - Synology

Hello,

As suggested by PLEX because of the breach, i have reset my plex account password, and relogged on my various plex player devices.

My problem is that my plex server is now unavailable, as i guess i also need to reset its password. I’m not in my local network, i’m remote, and i struggle to understand how to reset the plex password in DSM. And when i try to open plex via the package, it says i cannot while connected via quick connect.

What am I supposed to do?

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6106-7000
Player Version#: 1.52.1.3195-a0c4d5e9

I just dealt with the password reset myself, not fun and I wish the alert email had a special note for maintainers of media servers that there will be extra steps and to not change the password until you have local network access to your server.

I’m running my Plex server on Synology. Post-password change and learning the server login was now out of whack, and seeing messages about not being able to access my server, I did some messing around with preferences.xml and media server settings, and things that may have included de-authorizing my server from the server interface parts I could still get to. I saw notes online about accessing the server on the local LAN. I already had been, but I restored my pre-password-change backup of preferences.xml and did what I hadn’t noticed in online advice, used IP address instead of server name. When I did that, I was able to see my libraries load and re-claim the server to my Plex account. After I did that, things are now working as they should.

So my advice to folks is 1) DO NOT CHANGE PASSWORD until you have local LAN access, 2) Backup your Plex Media Server files before messing with things, especially Preferences.xml, and 3) make sure you’re using the LAN-based IP address of the media server in your URL when you’re dealing with these fixes

Unfortunately if you’re reading this you probably came here after changing your password.

If Plex folks see this, your instructions at What if Your Plex Account Requires a Password Reset? | Plex Support are good, but in the “Sign In/Claim Your Plex Media Server” section, maybe put an explicit note that using a server machine name will not work. You have notes about using the IP address, but I think a note saying the machine name will make the process not work would be very helpful. edit: thanks for the note on that page!

I had the same problem on my ASUSTOR NAS.

I have found a solution for my ASUSTOR NAS.
Maybe it will work also on other NAS Systems.

  1. Stop Plex Server on the NAS
  2. backup the file preferences.xml and then delete it in the Plex directory
  3. DO NOT delete the Plex directory !
  4. uninstall Plex Server on the NAS
  5. reinstall Plex Server on the NAS
  6. Open the website from the Plex icon on the NAS and login again
  7. Go through the steps and then at the point of media libraries you should see your previous libraries.
  8. Reorder the display
  9. If necessary, set the remote access again, because if a port forwarding was set up, it is no longer correct.

It worked for me and I don’t have to re-import anything and all the movies etc
All already seen movies / series were marked accordingly.

Same; changed my password this morning and my server is now missing when I login.

I changed to the local IP address, logged back in, reclaimed the server and its not showing back up.

After changing your password, you will need to reclaim your server. Follow the steps to do that in this article that PLEX sent with the email today. What if Your Plex Account Requires a Password Reset? | Plex Support
