Are there any plans to fix the issue where Plex automatically plays podcasts from oldest to newest regardless of their played status? Working in software development for a life and seeing this issue being years old I’ll venture an answer: No.
I’m not liking this Plex trend of adding features that won’t be fixed or well maintained (I’m looking at you, Photo Upload).
Plex plays things in the order shown. If you want to play from newest, change the sort to go from newest to oldest. This setting is per show. While looking at the show, click on the overflow menu (the 3 dots), then “Show settings”. There you will see “Episode sorting”.
Thanks, but the problem with this approach is that I have to scroll and scroll all the way down to get to the last episode. As far as I’ve seen any other podcast app can list episodes in descending order but play them in the opposite direction. Which makes more sense because the latest episodes show readily at the top while the next newest is played automatically.
You can make a feature request to ask for this. Personally, that doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you want to see the info for the newest episode if you are going to play the oldest one? I would want to see the info for the episode I am going to play.
The one to be played next is not the oldest but the following newest. Let’s say that this is an episode listing sorted as newest first. Bold ones are unplayed:

…
On Plex, when 99 finishes playing, 98 plays next. On other apps, when 99 is done, 100 plays.
There are quite a few issues with podcast support in Plex, but this is absolutely the biggest one (along with every episode being added to the queue whether it has been played or not).

Ok, I get what you are saying. Sorting in ascending order places the new stuff at the bottom of the list so it may take a while to scroll done to it. Listing in ascending places the new stuff at the top but doesn’t play in ascending order. I get this would be useful to show descending and play ascending. However, if this was a new podcast the next to listen to would be the oldest so you would be switching from ascending to descending at some point.
I wonder if it would be more convenient to just hide played episodes, that way you can keep it sorted in ascending order and have the next to be played at the top. This would need to be a feature request, but that is something I could back. Changing the playback order on the fly seems more difficult.
Implementing the traditional behavior across podcast apps would be the ideal solution (sort descending, play ascending), but if this is impractical for now your suggestion of hiding the played episodes could be a workaround.
