Hi all,
I am using a Plex Server on a WD EX2 Ultra. I am directly plugged into a Google Wifi access point and stream movies to my Apple TV (which is also directly plugged into a Google WiFi access point). When I try to play 4K SDR 8 bit files, there are no issues. When I try to play 4k SDR 10 bit files or any 4k HDR files (8 or 10 bit), I have issues with either slow, buffering videos or some really weird green pixelated images on the screen. I have limited networking skills but I have to assume that if everything is directly connected via ethernet cables, there should be no issues.
What can cause this?
Is there a limitation on my internal network or Plex Server?
Is there a limitation on the ethernet cables that I am using?
Hey there @JaysPlex …thank you for the quick reply.
I did a speedtest and it was around 100 Mbps.
The video doesn’t appear to be transcoding and has these specs:
As of now, the video is playing OK but I am having occasional green pixelation. However, how can I increase the Mbps reserved for playback? Yours shows 139 Mbps which, I would imagine, would clear up my issues.
139mbps is what that particular file needs in order to direct play. I’m playing that on a Nvidia Shield and that allows me to get my full network speed at 500 Mbps. I’m guessing you are capped at 100mbps on the Apple TV. (assuming your overall network speed is faster than 100 Mbps)
Increasing the bandwidth available to you would mean using a different device that has a Gigabit ethernet port or using Wi-Fi. 100 Mbps is generally good enough for most files so I’m not even sure if that has anything to do with your problem
I know people get weird color problems like red or green tint when they try to play Dolby Vision files on an unsupported device like a Samsung TV
The file in your screen shot appears to be a 4k 8-bit SDR file which you said you were able to play ok
If something is going to max out your bandwidth or cause a transcode those HDR files will be what you’d want to look at
Try to pick one of your HDR10 files so you can replicate the problem
If you can, take a screen shot of the video itself next time you get the green pixilation. Someone who’s encountered that before may know exactly what the problem is just by seeing it
You should probably post your server logs at the same time in case this is just some sort of bug
That screenshot was actually captured during playback of a 4K 10 bit HDR file.
I will wait for further problems so that I can post the server logs.
Also, I believe that my Apple TV is capable of 1Gbps speeds when using a wired connection. My speeds tend to rate at around 300 Mbps but for whatever reason, last night the speed was lower at that moment. But I agree with you - 100 Mbps should be able to handle that speed with no issue.
And I’m not sure if the file was a Dolby Vision file but my Apple TV does support DV.
