Poster AND Background not working, only OR

Server Version#:1.21.3.4046
Player Version#:1.28.0.1681

I have movies and movie collections which show cover art as 2x3 in the library etc. However, when I open that movie or collection page the artwork is displayed as 16x9. I have tried using background setup but Plex only allows me to select 2x3 for all or 16x9 for all. Is there a naming convention I am missing?

I have tried jpg and png formats for cover, poster, fanart, backdrop, background. Perhaps is there a way to pickup the artwork from the MP4 file for the 2x3 and set the 16x9 externally in the directory?

If it is showing a horizontal poster for the movie on the preplay/summary page, the individual movie is likely using the personal media agent rather than the Plex Movie (Legacy) or TheMovieDB agent the main library may be using.

I’m guessing these are ones that maybe did not match right and you manually added metadata to.

you can tell if the individual movie is using the personal media agent by looking at the GUID in the xml that will say NONE at the end. Or if you use the menu there is only a “match” option rather than a “Fix Match” option

Though I understand the possible trepidation in doing so I would suggest at some point upgrading the matching to use the new Plex Movie agent ( the non legacy one). but before you do that you may want to create a second library pointing at the same folders to see how it might rematch using the new agent before converting your existing library.

I have moved my library from a fully loaded iTunes compatible complete with all meta data including move artwork embedded in the mp4 file. Moving to the new Plex Server, I have started to rename movies by way of folder with movie and poster, background and theme. It just seems to ignore all but the movie poster.

When I use Plex, many movies come up mismatched and it refuses to read my local data. I have not moved on to the TV Shows yet. I am trying to get collections setup since I have to be stringent about file names now instead of having Plex read titles in the MP4 metadata.

If I move to using Plex Movie database, will it then accept customizations?

both accept customizations. for the legacy agent you need to make sure “local Media Assets” is above in priority in the servers agent settings to prefer it over online data. though if there is no online data then it should have gone to local next.

for the new agent the setting is in the advanced settings of the library itself (it can be different per library.)
