Many of my TV shows have an embedded poster in the video file (typically the DVD cover or something similar). Plex prefers this image over the thumbnails it generates, which is not ideal when browsing a season—all the episodes have the same image.
I know I can manually change the poster for each episode, but this is tedious. Is there a way to make the change in bulk, or to ignore/deprioritize the embedded images?

you can either:
disable the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent altogether
But this will also disable other local assets like sidecar posters, external subtitles and custom theme music
or
change the priority so the online meta data sources “win”, which will get you an individual episode thumb in the majority of cases.
Like so:
Go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
Perform the Plex Dance with one series to try out the effect.
Keep in mind that you still need to conform to the Plex naming guidelines for tv shows
