"Prefer HD" and "Replace lower resolution items" not working as expected?

Yesterday Plex recorded both airings of “Grand Designs” (S20E05) - one on Channel 4 at 9pm (in SD) and one on Channel 4 HD also at 9pm (in HD).

The same season and the same episode recorded at exactly the same time.

  • Given that I had “Prefer HD” enabled I would have expected Plex to record only Channel 4 HD.
  • Given that I had “Replace lower resolution items” enabled, I would have expected that after the completion of the recordings, the SD version would have been removed (because there was a HD version to replace it)

Neither of these worked and I’m now the proud owner of two recordings of the same show in two different resolutions.

Are both options broken? Or am I just not understanding how they work?
