Preventing problems with Plex when upgrading to Synology Dsm 7.1 formal release

@BigSlimVdub

You don’t have to upgrade if you don’t want to.
We support DSM 6 and 7 for now.
If there were ever a DSM 8 then you’d need to upgrade.

As for upgrading from DSM 6 → DSM 7.

  1. Uninstall PMS

  2. Upgrade DSM

  3. Download Plex from Plex.tv/downloads – DO NOT use Package Center (it’s no longer compatible

  4. This FAQ is a bit dated but “Scenario 2” will be best.
    – The Installer will print messages (popup windows) if it doesn’t like anything.
    – Follow the instructions given ( refer to this FAQ if needed )

  1. DO NOT interrupt it when it gets to “Installing”.

  2. It may take a long time but it won’t get hung/stuck. The time needed will depend on how much metadata you have in the Plex shared folder.

  3. Sometimes DSM (package center) complains. Ignore it. Instead, open a session and look for Migration.log in the “Plex” shared folder.

  4. Migration.log will show you which stage of processing it’s at.

  5. you’ll know when it’s complete after “Cleaning: /volume1/Plex” is done.

  6. It will print a final message and tell you how to set permissions.
    (the username changed from “Plex” → “PlexMediaServer”

Here are the instructions from the popup – expanded out with screenshots.
