Private works but Public doesn't

I am a noobie to Plex and just got it for my collection of movies. Right now I am having a problem with plex.

Here is what it is telling me:


Plex started off good with me being able to access outside of my network with the same settings. But it no longer works. I honestly wish I could get it to work without port forwarding but I may have to. If anyone can help me that would be great. I may just be missing something that I wouldn’t normally find. Thanks in advance.

You have the checkbox ticked ‘Manually specify public port’.
This means you have to have the portforwarding in your router already present.

Btw. if you clear this checkbox, Plex will instead talk to the router and ask it – to create a portforwarding. That’s called UPnP.
So, from a security perspective there is not difference to a manual portforwarding.

However, those automatic portforwarding tend to get disabled by some router models after a while.
So a manual portforwarding is the way to go for a Plex server which not only needs to be available a few hours, but rather weeks, months and years.
