Problem matching TV Show

Hi Forum Members

Guess what, three days ago I had entered a new complete TV season into Plex (a second season of a three season series), I was also careful to enter in the TVDB ID reference against each and every individual TV show. However, when I check my entries the next day I found that Plex had changed most of what I had entered into something very different, something with a partially similar name and completely different cast, crew and posters.

I had to go into my Plex database and remove most of the incorrect data and replace it with correct data and a front season poster.

However, to my knowledge, I have no way of changing the wrong cast and crew, Plex had auto-entered, to the correct cast.

So fellow members, is there anyway of changing/editing/updating the “cast and crew” part of the Plex Database?

Let’s give that its own thread.

You cannot overwrite cast & crew individually (except for a few names exposed in the tags; but even that’ll give you a limited result). Instead, you’ll probably be better off using the Fix Match option on the show itself.

Please provide a directory listing or screenshot showing how the show is named and organized. Include the folder added to the library and episode file names including the extension.

If Plex is matching the wrong show or the Plex metadata system has incorrect information, then the info can be used to correct Plex’s systems.

If you are using TVDB as your primary reference, you should set “TVDB (Aired)” as the default “Episode Ordering” of your library.
(Edit Library, Advanced tab)
You can override this default for each show. (also in the properties of the show, on the Advanced tab)

Hi Fellow Forum Members

At this moment, I believe that I can now answer all of your queries and, to keep things simple, I will list my answers in the order the queries were posted:

  1. Hi Tom80H

You said, “You’ll probably be better off using the Fix Match option on the show itself.”

To tell you the truth, I have never seen this facility within Plex nor would I know which subsection within “Setting” I would find it.

Therefore, could you please post some simple instructions on where to find the “Fix Match option*”.*

Well FG, you’ve asked, Can I supply screenshots of my directory listing or screenshot showing how the show is named and organized, etc.

You know, I do not feel comfortable putting screenshots of my Plex data and/or screens in the forum. Just a touch of my paranoia peeking through.

I am much more at ease typing out a sample of how I enter my TV show data in Windows Explorer, where Plex then scans and picks up.

Just found out, I cannot attach any additional notes, tables or diagrams to my post.

Moving on, Hi OttoKerner

You suggested, “If you are using TVDB as your primary reference, you should set “TVDB (Aired)” as the default “Episode Ordering” of your library”.

Well, I am using three methods, IMDB IDs for the show’s name, season number and year. I then use a tagging utility, to add photos and additional data, and TVDB ID’s for individual episodes.

On the whole, my method seems to work up to and until Plex throws a wobbly and picks on some shows to overwrite everything with either Japanese or South Korean shows, complete with posters, non-English data and Japanese or South Korean cast and crew.

And as you can imagine, it’s this “wobbly I am trying to prevent

Getting tired, and I still haven’t finished this post yet.

Gonna get back to it in a few hours, after a sandwich and some sleep (I’ll probably re-write it once I clear the fog from my poor ancient brain).

  1. Go to your tv-show library
  2. Open the context menu of the show you want to match (note: make sure to do that on the show, not a season or episode… if you use the Recently Added hub, this might list a season instead!)
    • Option 1: click from on the show’s poster
    • Option 2: open the show and click ... in the controls for this show
  3. Click Fix Match...
  4. Find the correct match
    • Option 1: Pick from the list of match candidates Plex found based on your file naming / organization
    • Option 2: Click Search Options to specify the exact name… of the show you want to match

If the files are properly organized/named (following the naming schema described in Plex’s support articles), the show should automatically match (that’s what FordGuy61 was aiming for).

If Fix Match does not work, then we need to know which show and exactly how it is named and organized.

Most of the time the problems are with naming/organization or file permissions.

However, there is always the occasional show that gives Plex fits. There may be conflicting data from TMDB/TVDB, bad data in the systems at Plex, etc.

Need to know the show info to try and replicate and troubleshoot.

As others have mentioned, having the name of the show would help. Just to see if we can replicate the problem you are seeing.

I’ll go out on a limb. Is this the Netflix series Monster? The recent season 3 seems to have caused several folks issues. There a more than a few threads here in the past month about it.

Plex DocumentationYour MediaNaming & Organizing Your TV Show Files

As explained in your thread from September, you are not following Plex naming and organizing requirements.

Until you do so Plex will continue to have trouble recognizing TV shows.

Provide exact details on how you are naming and organizing your media or it will not be possible to assist.

If you like, you can send me the info via direct message. Click on my username and then the Message button. I’ll look it over and involve other Ninjas or Plex employees if needed.

Hi FG61 & napolij

It’s been a bit of a time since I’ve been here but, as you guys can guess, life gets in the way.

Pushing on, I believe I can now store films and TV programs in my Plex database without Plex’s updating processes overwriting or adding erroneous data to my entries. In other words, I can now see my entries, posters, etc. without any problems and now any auto-additions made by Plex are complimentary, and no longer destructive.

However, those TV series where Plex has auto-added a non-western TV cast and crew, I guess, I am stuck with. Simply because, this (very small) problem does not prevent me from enjoying the programs I am watching.

Anyway guys, thanks for your help, and offers of help, as I can now say that I am happy with how I can now use my Plex database and it’s subsequent performance.

Cheers

UK Bob
